Tenure-Track Faculty Position, Asian Studies (AS):

Underwood International College, Yonsei University, South Korea

The Underwood International College (UIC) of Yonsei University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position beginning in Spring 2025 at the level of Assistant Professor of Asian Studies to teach and conduct research at the International Campus in Songdo, located within the greater Seoul metropolitan region of South Korea.

Qualifications

We seek applicants with strong interdisciplinary research and teaching interests in Asian Studies with a focus on the Humanities (including but not limited to History, Culture, Society, Film Studies, and Literature).

The successful candidate would be a scholar with a promising publication record, firm commitment to our students’ undergraduate liberal arts education, and research and teaching interests that engage global perspectives. As all instruction at UIC is conducted in English, candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills in English. Consistent with Yonsei University’s continuing efforts to increase faculty diversity, we only encourage applications from non-Korean citizens. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. prior to the appointment date beginning from 1st of March, 2025.

Teaching responsibilities are 6 credit-hours per week (2 courses per semester). The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in their field of expertise, though an ability to teach introductory courses in Asian Studies would also be considered an advantage.

Compensation includes a competitive salary, health insurance, and other benefits. Additionally, non-Korean citizens not currently living in Korea are eligible for housing support for up to 6 years, reimbursement for international moving expenses, and an excellent retirement plan.

About the Asian Studies Major, HASS Division, and UIC

  • The Asian Studies Major

Founded on the humanities and the humanistic social sciences, the Asian Studies major is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to the study of the histories, cultures, and societies of Asia. For some students, the Asian Studies major will provide the intellectual foundations necessary for graduate study. For others, it will serve as a springboard to professional careers boosted by cosmopolitan perspectives on intellectual, literary, and political endeavours, of the past and present. The Asian Studies major has research strengths in the history of colonialism, imperialism, comparative literature, and media studies in East Asia from the fourteenth century to the present.

  • The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Division

The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Division of UIC focuses on interdisciplinary approaches covering various fields of interest from regional studies, art, business, social sciences, and humanities. Students not only specialize in their respective fields, but also learn to explore and utilize the broader perspectives and framework that are necessary in today’s workplaces, whether it be the public sector, multinational corporations, NGOs, or academia.

  • Underwood International College

Yonsei University’s Underwood International College is a highly selective program at South Korea’s most prestigious private university, and combines the intimate atmosphere and low student-faculty ratio of a liberal arts college with the resources of a major research university. All instruction is in English, and the student body represents over 70 different countries.
