Job description:
PostDoc in Marine Biogeochemistry for the project "KomSo" (f/m/d)

Background
KomSo is a collaborative project of the marine research institutes AWI, GEOMAR, Hereon an IOW, as well as the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the NGO German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND). The overarching goal is to record and evaluate the carbon storage potential of marine sediments in the German Baltic Sea and identify regions worthy of protection and suitable for restoration. Specifically, we seek to combine measurements of sedimentary organic carbon content and remineralization rates with sedimentation rate measurements and the spatial distributions of controlling environmental parameters in order to:
  • quantify the sedimentary organic carbon (OC) content for Baltic Sea sediments,
  • assess their OC accumulation rate and OC storage capacity,
  • parameterize OC sedimentation and remineralization and extrapolate rates in the Baltic Sea.

Your Tasks
You will be responsible for:
  • the planning and conduct of ship-based sampling campaigns,
  • the measurement and analysis OC content and improvement of measurement accuracy by conducting an intercalibration of methods between project partners,
  • determining sedimentation rates using isotope geochemistry (210Pb and 137Cs),
  • collecting and merging existing data sets of OC accumulation and controlling parameters,
  • applying diagenetic models and conducting a meta-analysis with Baltic Sea boundary conditions, and
  • presenting results in scientific journals and to non-experts in a comprehensible form

Your Profile
  • PhD in geoscience, bioscience, or environmental sciences
  • Expertise in organic carbon mineralization processes
  • Expertise in sediment transport and depositional processes in coastal waters
  • Experience in carbon analytics and isotope geochemistry
  • Experience in data-based inverse modeling
  • Willingness and capability to participate in seagoing expeditions

Further Information
The AWI is characterized by
  • our scientific success - excellent research
  • collaboration and cooperation - intra-institute, national and international, interdisciplinary
  • opportunities to develop – on the job and towards other positions
  • an international environment – everyday contact with people from all over the world
  • flexible working hours
  • health promotion and company fitness with Hansefit and Wellhub
  • support services and a culture of reconciling work and family
  • occupational pension provision (VBL)

AWI values diversity and actively promotes gender parity, as well as an open, inclusive environment that provides equal opportunities. We are convinced that diverse teams and a variety of perspectives enrich our work and our daily collaboration. In a continuous process of learning and reflection, we aim to ensure that all our employees can be themselves and feel a sense of belonging.
