Job description

Location: Blood Cancer Research Group (BCRG), University of Ostrava and University Hospital Ostrava, Czech Republic

Position Overview:
We are inviting applications for PhD student and Postdoctoral positions within the Blood Cancer Research Group (BCRG). This group is a collaborative initiative between the University of Ostrava and University Hospital Ostrava, focusing on both fundamental and translational research in cell therapy. Our research spans primary patient material analysis, bioinformatics, cutting-edge biochemical and genetic techniques, in vivo models, and state-of-the-art multi-omics methods.

Research Focus:

  • -Fundamental Research: Our studies investigate the biological roles of critical immunotherapy targets, assessing their involvement in drug resistance, disease progression, and metastasis.
  • -Translational Research: We are pioneering in the development of monoclonal antibodies, chimeric antigen receptors (CAR), and hybrid T-cell receptors, utilizing CRISPR-based, non-viral methods for precise genetic modification (e.g., knock-outs and knock-ins) of primary T-cells.

Our findings have been published in top-tier journals, including Nature Communications, Leukemia, and Journal of Clinical Oncology, and we currently hold three patent applications. With the establishment of a CAR T/NK-cell production facility and multiple clinical trials on the horizon, our ultimate goal is to develop innovative prognostic markers, therapeutic targets, and cell-based treatments for cancer.

What We Offer:

  • -Comprehensive Core Facilities: BCRG is closely linked with the Hematooncology Department, providing direct access to a vast patient sample repository. Our facilities include advanced proteomics, bioinformatics, microscopy, and flow cytometry resources, as well as a modern animal center managed by experienced scientists. English is the primary working language in our international team.
  • -Secured Funding: We provide competitive salaries and a supportive environment for career development, including opportunities for specialized courses, attendance at international conferences, and industry collaboration. Positions for PhD students and postdocs are fully funded for at least four years.
  • -Professional Growth: As part of the newly established Life Environment Research Center Ostrava (LERCO), a multidisciplinary research hub, we offer unique opportunities for career advancement. Team members are encouraged to develop professionally, with potential to start independent research within BCRG and LERCO.
  • -Translational Potential: Our close collaboration with hematooncologists at the University Hospital ensures our research addresses clinically relevant issues. This setup enhances the translational potential of our work, with avenues for clinical trials, patent applications, and industry partnerships.

Who We’re Looking For:

  • -Qualifications: MSc or PhD in biology, biochemistry, medicine, biomedical sciences, or bioengineering with strong academic performance.
  • -Experience: Background in cancer biology, hematology, immunology, or cell therapy is preferred.
  • -Skills: Fluent English, creativity, quality-orientation, and enthusiasm for scientific exploration.

Application Instructions:
To apply, please submit:

  1. A brief statement of your professional experience, career objectives, and research interests.
  2. A CV detailing your education, research experience, skills, and publications.
  3. Contact information for two referees who can provide letters of recommendation.

Application Information:

  • Deadline: December 31, 2025 (Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.)
  • Expected Start Date: Within 2025
