Principal Investigator: prof. dr hab. Marek Figlerowicz

Research topic Research on the genetic structure of the Polish and Czech populations in the period of formation of early state structures in the 9th-11th centuries.

I. Project description

The main objective of this project is to investigate the mechanisms underlying early state formation processes in Central and Eastern Europe and to explore the relationships between populations involved in establishing these emerging political structures. The phenomena in question will be studied comparatively using the examples of early Polish statehood (centered in Greater Poland, with key power hubs such as Poznań and Gniezno) and early Czech statehood (developed in the Czech Basin with power concentrated in a small area of Central Bohemia).

In both cases, these societies, during the transition from tribal to early state organizations, exhibited a relatively simple, two-tiered structure: an elite group associated with the ruling dynasty and a general population living outside the centers of power, primarily engaged in agriculture or livestock breeding. Identifying the origins of both the elites and the broader population in these early states is made possible through genetic and genomic research. By integrating these findings with historical, archaeological, and linguistic evidence, the project aims to answer key questions about the socio-political processes shaping Central and Eastern Europe around the turn of the first and second millennium AD.

Research shall be carried out within the 2023/51/I/NZ8/02946 NCN project entitled “At the dawn of Central European statehood on the example of the Czech and Poland. Dynasties-elites-societies (late 9th- 11th century)”, funded by National Science Centre.

Benefits

The expected salary is approximately PLN 9,000 gross.

II. Requirements for the candidates:

The candidate should have:

  1. Ph.D. (or equivalent) in bioinformatics or biological sciences.
  2. ability to conduct bioinformatic analyses (primarily genomics) and visualize the results.
  3. knowledge of genomics, population genetics, next-generation sequencing, and topics relevant to the project's subject matter.
  4. very good command of English, enabling effective communication, as well as the reading and preparation of scientific papers.
  5. strong motivation for further development, be characterized by independence, good organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to work in a team.

*According to NCN requirements, only individuals who obtained a doctoral degree no earlier than 7 years before the year of employment in the project may be admitted. This period may be extended by the time spent on long-term (over 90 days) documented sickness benefits or rehabilitation benefits due to incapacity for work. Additionally, the period may be extended by the number of months spent on leave for the care and upbringing of children, as specified under the Labor Code. In the case of women, this period may also be increased by 18 months for each born or adopted child, if this method of accounting for breaks in the scientific career is more advantageous.

Furthermore, according to NCN requirements, individuals who obtained a doctoral degree at an institution other than the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, or those who earned the degree at ICHB PAN but completed a continuous, documented postdoctoral internship of at least 10 months at an institution other than the project-implementing entity and in a country different from where the doctoral degree was obtained, may be admitted.

III. Duties in project:

  1. Active involvement in the implementation of the project, including planning and conducting experiments, as well as developing and interpreting results, particularly through bioinformatic analyses in genomics and population genetics.
  2. Preparing summaries and reports.
  3. Continuously expanding knowledge in areas relevant to the project.
  4. Preparing scientific publications.
  5. Supervising the work of students and PhD students.
  6. Presenting results at seminars, scientific meetings, and conferences.

IV. Required documents:

  1. Application to the Director of IBCH PAN, containing contact details of previous scientific supervisors or other scientific employees who can give an opinion on the candidate.
  2. Copy of the diploma confirming the achievement of the doctoral degree.
  3. Scientific CV, containing, among others, information on scientific, didactic and organizational achievements,

including a list of scientific publications, information on management or participation in research projects

V.    Applications should be submitted via the eRecruiter portal at

https://system.erecruiter.pl/FormTemplates/RecruitmentForm.aspx?WebID=97cf64f65b5d4bfd90f94b2495b51723

VI.   Submission deadline is 23.01.2025.
