The PEMFC95 project is part of the national strategy for decarbonized H2 PEPR, concerning the development of PEM fuel cells. This project is funded by the ANR. LEPMI, as the main leader of this project, is involved in several areas. The current position concerns task 7 of the project, in particular the assessment of the environmental impacts of PEMFC95. The (partial) replacement of Pt by non-noble metals and the simplification of the PEMFC system operating at 95°C (in particular the modifications relating to the humidification system and the cooling loop), should significantly reduce the environmental impact of PEMFC95 compared to current fuel cells.

The impact of non-noble elements such as Ni (which contributes significantly to the impacts of Li-ion batteries) and the ionomer will be assessed by the LCA methodology, conducted in compliance with international standards (ISO 14040 standards). In this context, the main missions of the position
include:

• The choice of the functional unit (FU), the system boundaries (including the humidification loop and the
cooling loop, which are highly impacted by the rise in operating temperature of the PEMFC system) and the
impact categories (IC) will constitute the core and starting point of task 7.

• The construction of life cycle model(s) corresponding to the research paths developed, with the help of the consortium members.

• The collection of data concerning inputs and outputs for each unit process of the project via a synthetic spreadsheet prepared by LEPMI. Missing data will be enriched with secondary data from commercial databases or literature.

•The multi-criteria assessment of the environmental impacts of each scenario, carried out using LCA software, to identify the influential parameters of the life cycle (loading and nature of the metals of the ECs, production of reagents, treatment of waste products, presence of auxiliaries, etc.) and therefore, make the right environmental choices for the materials and processes of the project.

Skills/Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree in industrial engineering, materials or process engineering. The candidate should already be familiar with life cycle assessment and have previously used a LCA software program.

Rigor, autonomy and an analytical mind are essential to successfully carry out the tasks of this position. The ability to interpret results and suggest methodological improvements will be particularly appreciated.

Finally, project management skills and good team spirit will be an asset in collaborating effectively with project partners.

Specific Requirements

This position offers the possibility of remote working up to two days a week once 6 months' seniority has been acquired.

Occasional travel to project partners is required to monitor progress and discuss analyses.

Regular interaction with partners will also be required to provide and discuss analysis results
