Through robust and close interaction with the world around us – globally, nationally and locally – we shall be instrumental in building a society based on knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Do you want to take part in shaping the future?

Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position postdoctoral position within marine biogeochemical modelling at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.

The position is for a fixed term of 3 years.
The position is associated with three Horizon Europe projects; OceanICU, SEAClim, and TipESM, funded by the European Union under GA Nr. 101083922, GA Nr. 101180125, and GA Nr. 101137673.

About the project/work tasks

OceanICU will further increase our knowledge on the role of the ocean in the global carbon cycle, focusing on the functioning of the biological carbon pump, with the aim to develop practical management tools. SEAClim will provide detailed predictions and projections of decadal-to-multidecadal changes in marine environments focusing on the North Atlantic. TipESM will explore tipping points, their driving processes, and their impacts using the latest generation of Earth System Models.

For this position, we are looking for a candidate that will increase our understanding of multiyear-to-centennial changes in marine biogeochemistry related to climate change and the internal variability of the Earth System. The successful applicant will quantify the predictability of changes in marine biogeochemistry by analysing state-of-the art Climate Prediction Models. The candidate will further analyse adaptive emission scenarios to quantify safe mitigation pathways for selected tipping elements in the Earth System.

The candidate will be part of the Biogeochemistry Research Group at the Geophysical Institute, of the Carbon System Research Theme at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The candidate is expected to actively engage in research collaboration across SEAClim, OceanICU, and TipESM, and to be motivated to do research at an internationally competitive level.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within marine biogeochemistry, oceanography, climate sciences, or related fields, and must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • A thorough understanding of regional- to large-scale ocean biogeochemistry, in particular of carbon cycle processes, dynamics of oxygen and nutrient cycles, is required.
  • Expertise in scientific scripting, programming, and data analysis (e.g., Python, Matlab, R) is required.
  • Knowledge of climate variability and predictability is an advantage.
  • Experience with Linux clusters, and running Earth System Models, is an advantage.
  • Experience with handling large datasets, such as CMIP data, is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently,in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Documentation of independent research and writing skills is required.
  • Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow

The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. If the appointee lacks teaching experience, or other relevant qualifications, the employment period may be increased to 3 years and 3 months. Teaching and other duties will in such cases be added to the position. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work, as well as a progress plan, will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor and head of department.

It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

We can offer

  • a good and professionally stimulating working environment
  • position as postdoctoral fellow (code 1352 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 624 500 upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
  • enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • good welfare benefits

Your application must include

  • a brief account of your research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • a summary of your skills with respect to the qualifications listed above.
  • the names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor from the PhD programme.
  • CV

  • transcripts and diplomas and official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted
  • relevant certificates/references
  • list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list with links)
