1 Research Grant (M/F)

Call open for applications for a research grant within the framework of project eMetCO2 - eNETmix technology for electrocatalytic production of Methanol from captured CO2, with the reference CETP/0004/2023, financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., through national funds within the scope of the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP), under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Chemical Characterization and Analysis Techniques, Environmental Science and Technology, or related areas.

Admission requirements: Candidates who cumulatively meet the following two requirements may apply to this call:

Requirement 1:

- Hold a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Chemical Characterization and Analysis Techniques, Environmental Science and Technology, or related areas.

Note: If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16th August, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled until the time of signing up for the contract.

Requirement 2:

- Be enrolled in a Master’s or Integrated Master’s program and have already completed the 180 credits corresponding to the first six curricular semesters in the field of Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Chemical Characterization and Analysis Techniques, Environmental Science and Technology, or related areas. This requirement must be duly verified at the time of signing the contract.

or

- Be Holder of an academic degree and be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, requirement to be proven at the time of signing the contract.

Note: In the case of degree holders who are enrolled in non-academic degree courses, the scholarship can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with this scholarship contract, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of two years in that typology of the scholarship, followed or interpolated.

Work plan: The eMetCO2 project focuses on the development of an advanced and energy-efficient technology for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (eCO2R) to methanol. This new technology integrates: 1) a disruptive electrochemical reactor based on the NETmix static mixer, and 2) innovative electrocatalysts. The technology will be developed at laboratory scale under conditions relevant for subsequent industrial application, with the ultimate goal of stimulating commercial interest and advancing the technology to a higher TRL level (from 2 to 5). The activities to be carried out under this scholarship correspond to WP2, specifically Task 2.4, which involves the characterization of the NETmix reactor in terms of mass transfer, and Task 2.5, which involves experimental testing aimed at optimizing the NETmix reactor, using different electrodes and operating conditions.

Applicable legislation and regulation: Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, as currently worded (Research Fellowship Holder Statute) and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) Regulation for Studentships and Fellowships in force (https://www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/), and Regulation of Research Grants of the University of Porto in force.

Workplace: The work will be developed at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), under the scientific supervision of Dr. Maria Francisca da Costa Moreira and Dr. Vítor Jorge Pais Vilar.

Grant duration and activity scheme: The grant will have a duration of 06 months, with scheduled starting date in February 2026, on an exclusive basis, possibly renewable, but not exceeding the project’s completion date.

If it is not possible to ensure the 06-month duration mentioned in the previous paragraph, this duration will be adjusted according to the project’s end date, provided that a minimum period of 3 consecutive months is guaranteed, as stipulated in paragraph 3 of Article 6 of the Regulations for Research Fellowships of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

Any possible renewal of the fellowship will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of Article 6 of the Regulations for Research Fellowships of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

Stipend: The grant stipend amounts from 1.040,98€ according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/) and 1.120,98€, depending on the profile and research experience of the candidate in the project field. If the amount exceeds 1.040,98€, the remaining amount will be ensured by FEUP funding not coming from the project funds. The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Selection procedure: A curricular assessment (60%) will be carried out, in which the following factors will be weighted:

a) Academic training (Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Chemical Characterization and Analysis Techniques, Environmental Science and Technology - 7 points; related areas - 5 points; other areas - 0 points);

b) Classification of academic training in the areas identified in the admission requirements for the call (average higher than or equal to 16/20 values - 7 points; 15/20 values - 6 points; 14/20 values - 5 points; less than 14/20 values - 0 points);

c) Research experience (in the area of the project - up to 6 points; in related areas - up to 3 points; in other areas - 0 points).

Candidates will be graded on a scale of 1 to 20 points. Only candidates who obtain a score of 12 points or higher in the curricular evaluation will be admitted to the interview stage (40%). During the interview, topics related to the work plan, previous experience, motivation, and the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae will be discussed.

The final evaluation will result from the sum of the curricular assessment and the interview score. If none of the candidates achieves a minimum final score of 15 points, the fellowship will not be awarded.

Composition of the Selection Jury:

President – Dr. Maria Francisca da Costa Moreira

1st effective member – Dr. Vítor Jorge Pais Vilar

2nd effective member – Dr. Tânia Filomena Castro Valente Silva

1st supplementary member – Dr. Ricardo Jorge Nogueira dos Santos
