Notice for International Call to hire an Assistant Researcher

Under the terms of Order No. 181/2023, of 04 January, by delegation of powers, the Director of the Faculty of Science and Technology, University NOVA of Lisbon, Prof. Dr. José Júlio Alves Alferes, makes known that, according to dispach of 17/11/2025, it is open until 15 December 2025, international call, with the internal reference "Ass.Inv.13.2025-DQ", for the recruitment of a one Research Assistant, under an uncertain contract term, in accordance with Regulation No. 393/2018, published in the Diário da República No. 123, 2nd series of June 28, 2018, within the scope of the project “ New membranes from bacterial cellulose produced from agri-waste streams”, under the program HORIZON-MSCA-2024-DN-01-01 – UP2MEM - Materials UP-cycling TO fabricate advanced MEMbrane technologies for water and food industries: towards zero waste and a circular economy- GRANT ID 101227653, funded by the Horizon Europe program, in progress at the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

I - Workplace:

The Assistant Researcher’s working place shall be at the premises of the Department of Chemistry of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in the framework of Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry, located at Campus de Caparica, Portugal under the supervision of Professor Joao Crespo at NOVA University of Lisbon (Portugal), and co-supervision of Dr. Francisco Nascimento (NOVA) and Dr. Esra Eray (Alfa-Laval).


He/She shall travel, in Portugal or abroad, as required by his/her attributions or as necessary for his/her activity.



II - Activities and Functions:

The work will comprise:

(i) Produce pure, crystalline bacterial cellulose using selected agri-waste streams as feedstock (glycerol from biodiesel production; dairy waste streams; beer waste streams, among others to be tested);

(ii) Use the produced bacterial cellulose to design and fabricate task-specific membranes for selected applications:

1 - Patches for wound-treatment through controlled drug-release, using electrospun membranes;

2 - Membranes for membrane chromatography devices, focused on pharma applications, making use of their high porosity and specific surface;

3 - Develop cellulose acetate membranes to be assessed against commercial membranes, produced conventionally.

(iii) validate the membranes developed, under industrial environment;

(iv) assess the technical, environmental and economic viability of the membranes developed.

To train the DC and enhance his/her expertise with regard to the PhD topic, the following secondments are planned:

(i) Alfa-Laval, mentor E. Eray (M12-19, 8 months): Scale-up of the new cellulose membranes for real applications;

(ii) A4F, mentor Bruno Sommer Ferreira (M23- 28, 6 months): Optimization of bacterial cellulose production and harvesting;

(iii) US, Supervisor M. J. Fernandez (M32-M34, 3 months): Using membranes for water treatment in the olive oil and table olive processing industry, studying the elimination of pollutants and the sustainable reuse of water resources;

(iv) Karvelas, supervisor: D. Dimitriadi (M37-40, 4 months): Study on the development of bacterial cellulose from agricultural waste and its application in water reuse at a pilot scale



III - Remuneration level:

According to the Regulation of early stage researchers (ESR) of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and the UNL Regulation is applied the n. º 3 of article 15 under n. º 393/2018 published in Diário da República no 123, 2nd Series, 28th of June 2018, the monthly salary in Portugal after the correction factor applied are

  • • Living allowance – €2.188,90/month;
  • • Mobility allowance of €710,00/month;
  • • Family allowance of €495/month depending on family situation at the time of recruitment.

    (this correspond gross monthly rate before all compulsory deductions applied to Portugal).


IV - Modality and duration:

1. The uncertain-term contract during, for a period of 36 months, or for the duration of the funding, but may not exceed the maximum limit of 48 months, under the terms of Article 148(5) of the Labour Code.


2. The termination of funding, the extinction of the project or the completion of the tasks that are the subject of this tender procedure will determine the expiry of the contract, which will take place with the notice referred to in Article 345(1) of the Labour Code, i.e. if the termination is expected, the employer must notify the employee of the termination at least seven, 30 or 60 days in advance, depending on whether the contract lasted up to six months, from six months to two years or longer.


3. Uncertain-term contracting is based on the execution of a specific, precisely defined and non-lasting service.



V – Requirements for admission of candidates

  1. • The candidates must have a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering;
  2. • Candidates are expected to be fluent in English (both oral and written), good academic writing and presentation skills;
  3. • The position is open to applicants from around the world, with the limitation that at the time of recruitment by the NOVA University of Lisbon, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work and/or studies) in Portugal for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date;
  4. • The candidates must demonstrate a high level of accomplishment and excellence in her/his previous academic experience.

    VI - Application procedure

  5. • Applications must be submitted by email containing the following documents in English:
  6. • Detailed CV (including academic record and publications, if any);
  7. • Copies of academic degrees and transcripts;
  8. • Motivation letter (max. 2 pages, including a description of previous research experience);
  9. • Contact details of up to two referees;
  10. • Copy of the passport.



VII - Submission of applications

1. The application documents must be submitted until December 15, 2025;

2. Candidates will submit their application documents, through a single file in PDF format, by email to the following address: concursos.investigadores@fct.unl.pt, indicating the reference of the procedure.



VIII – Evaluation criteria

  1. • Applications shall be subject to evaluation by a jury that shall follow the procedure established in n.º1 of article 37º of Estatuto da Carreira de Investigação Cientifica, Decree-Law n.º 124/99 and by UNL Regulation .º 393/2018 published in Diário da República n.º 123 ,2nd Series, June 28th of 2018.
  2. • The selection of the successful candidate will be carried out through the evaluation of the scientific and curricular achievements as established by n.º1 of article 37º of Decree-Law n.º 124/99 of april 20th, that approves the statute of Investigation career and by UNL Regulation nº 393/2018 published in Diário da República n.º 123, 2nd Series, at 28th of June, and the selection criteria and their respective weighting shall be as follows:


a) Evaluation of scientific and curricular experience (ESCE) - (50%)

The aim is to evaluate the quality and suitability of the candidate's academic training and professional experience in relation to the project topic, with an emphasis on the skills acquired and their relevance to the performance of the tasks.


b) Remote interview (50%)

The aim is to assess motivation for carrying out the project in its various aspects, involving not only the host institution but also the work to be done during the internship periods at partner institutions; to assess communication and oral presentation skills; to assess ambition and willingness to learn new techniques and scientifically based methodologies.



IX — Reasons for exclusion

  1. • Candidates who do not comply with the provisions of point V will not be admitted to the competition procedure, or who do not submit all the documents referred to in point VI, or who submit illegible, incorrectly filled out, or invalid documents, will be excluded without further consideration.
  2. • It also has the option of requiring any candidate, in case of doubt and for the purposes of admission to the tender procedure, to present documents proving the respective declarations.



    X — Notifications and Hearing of Interested Parties

    1. A prior hearing shall be held, under the terms of the Administrative Procedure Code, for candidates who have been rejected, and for candidates who have been placed on the ranking list of candidates who cannot be filled for the position open for competition. All the candidates shall be notified of the homologation of the jury's final deliberation.

    2. Notifications shall be made by email.
