MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship: Apply with IMT Atlantique and join us!

Thinking about your next career step and willing to boost your career? Looking to experience intersectoral, interdisciplinary and international research? Wishing to carry out your research in a place addressing industrial, environmental, societal and digital transitions as a priority challenge?

Then apply for a Marie Sklodowska-Curie (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowship with IMT Atlantique as your host institution!

The MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) provide funding to promising postdoctoral researchers with a view to develop their academic and transferable skills and enhance their career prospects by moving and working abroad.

By applying with IMT Atlantique you give yourself a chance to join a technological university ranked among the top 500 universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University's 2026 ranking (top 301-400 for Computer Science, top 201-250 for Engineering, top 301-400 for Physical sciences, and the 124th in the 2026 THE Interdisciplinary Science ranking, and top 51-100 for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the 2025 Shangaï ranking. IMT Atlantique is also awarded with the “Bienvenue en France” label, a recognition delivered by Campus France for our capacity to welcome and host international researchers in the best working conditions.

Topic open:

This Postdoctoral project aims to explore and apply a new class of microarchitectured scaffolds by taking advantage of the novel high productivity parallelised two-photon polymerization (2PP) setup at the IMT Atlantique. This high-resolution fabrication technology is capable of producing complex three-dimensional structures with sub-micrometric resolution over several cm² surfaces at industry compatible plot rates. Growing evidence demonstrates that biological cell behaviour is strongly influenced by micro-scale geometry, mechanical cues, and spatial organization; however, current scaffold fabrication methods remain limited in their ability to precisely control these parameters in three dimensions and at sub-micron resolution. By leveraging our unique high-throughput multiphoton microfabrication platform, the project will investigate how advanced architectural design can expand the accessible design space of bio-scaffolds beyond the constraints of conventional manufacturing approaches. Research directions may include hierarchical geometries, controlled pore networks, or anisotropic structures designed to guide cellular organization and tissue formation. Rather than targeting a single biological application, the project seeks to establish microarchitectured scaffolds as a versatile biofabrication framework supporting both fundamental studies of cell–material interactions and the development of next-generation in vitro models.

Supervisors: Prof. Kevin Heggarty and Dr. Thomas Le Deun

Keywords: Bio-scaffolds, Cell-material interactions, Multi-photon fabrication, Tissue engineering, Biofabrication, 3D microfabrication, Biomaterials

Skills/Qualifications

  • • Experience (PhD) and a professional network in bio-engineering and cell-material interactions.
  • • Motivation and curiosity to create new links and initiate joint projects between the fields of bio-engineering and nanofabrication.
  • • Experience of cleanroom work and photolithographic fabrication and characterisation techniques (optical/electronic microscopy, spectroscopy …) would be an advantage but not essential
  • • Aptitude for laboratory experimentation (fabrication) and applications.
  • • Ability to work and write scientific reports, publications and project proposals in English. French is not required initially.
