Workplan and the objectives to achieve:

The final approach phase to the runway for landing is a critical part of an aircraft’s flight, and therefore local wind conditions can significantly influence both the safety and efficiency of aircraft during landing. Madeira International Airport, located on the island of Madeira, Portugal, is known for its adverse wind conditions due to its geographical location and orography. The airport’s proximity to the ocean and the surrounding mountains creates complex wind patterns that may pose risks to aviation safety.

This project aims to:

  • • identify the flow regimes that cause unacceptable disturbances to aircraft during flight, and classify these regimes with reference to LiDAR and RADAR data in order to establish practical and safe operational criteria. This methodology relies heavily on the cooperation of air operators through the provision of Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) data, which will enable the identification of unacceptable disturbances during the approach phase of flight;
  • • validate local flow conditions at the airport that give rise to unacceptable disturbances to aircraft and, furthermore, identify any potential precursor conditions so that advance warning can be provided to aircraft.

Legislation and Regulations: Statute of Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law nr. 40/2004, of August 18, as worded by Decree-Law nr. 123/2019, of August 28; IDMEC Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, available on https://www.idmec.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/

Workplace: The work will be developed at IDMEC - Institute of Mechanical Engineering, being both the Host and Contracting Entity, and under the scientific supervision of Prof. Afzal Suleman.

Duration: The research fellowship(s) will have the duration of 12 months. It’s expected to begin in 1 March / April 2026, and may be eventually renewed up to the maximum stated by the law or the end of the project.
