Research project or operation :
Study of the medieval urbanization of Rouffach (68), through the layout and remains of the town wall and its integration into the surrounding urban fabric.

Activities

Description of the research activities :

• Field surveys and architectural analysis (preserved town wall, houses and cellars located along its route)
• Targeted archaeological test trenches
• Analysis of maps and plans from the 18th century to the present day
• Creation of a database
• Integration of results into the overall study conducted by the Rubiacum team (chronology of development phases of the town wall; graphical reconstruction of structures and their functioning)

Related activities :
Archival research (on site, in departmental and episcopal archives)

Skills

Qualifications/knowledge :

• History of medieval cities in Alsace in general and Rouffach in particular
• Strong knowledge of medieval defensive systems
• Proficiency in German (for discussions with university teams involved in the Rubiacum project)
• Methods and terminology of building archaeology

Operational skills/expertise :
• Conducting archaeological test trenches in an urban environment
• Handling and processing 3D scanner data
• Use of graphic software (Illustrator, QGIS)
• Conducting building surveys manually and through photogrammetry
• Analysis and use of medieval and early modern written sources
• Ability to analyze results from geophysical surveys
• Report writing skills

Personal qualities :
• Ability to integrate into a bilingual, multidisciplinary team
• Ability to live and work collectively during regular field missions

Environment and context of work

Presentation of the laboratory/unity :
• Fieldwork coordinated with the weeks organized by the German team (approximately one week per month)
• Additional fieldwork depending on research progress
• Fieldwork carried out on working days during standard working hours; same applies to analysis and reporting
• Occasional availability outside normal working hours in connection with dissemination activities (visits, conferences)
• Contribution to the final synthesis report
