2. Admission Requirements
Applicants may apply to this call provided they cumulatively meet the following requirements:
• Holder of a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Big Data, Mathematics or related fields*;
• Enrolment in a non-degree awarding course*;
• Experience with Large Language Models applied to the space domain.
*Applicants who have obtained their academic degree abroad must have the respective degree recognised in Portugal, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August. If, at the time of application, candidates do not present proof of degree recognition and/or proof of enrolment in a non-degree awarding course, they may submit a declaration under oath (attached to this Call for Applications), undertaking to provide the supporting documents by the grant contracting stage.

The grant holder will implement a complete Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline over a curated corpus of space regulation, operational guidelines and scientific documentation, systematically evaluating a reduced and well-justified set of retrieval strategies, embedding models and RAG configurations. The focus will be on achieving measurable improvements in answer accuracy, faithfulness to sources and robustness when dealing with ambiguous questions.
The work will prioritise quantitative evaluation in realistic space operations use cases, such as space traffic management and space debris mitigation. Safety and reliability mechanisms aimed at reducing hallucinations will be integrated and empirically evaluated. Expected results include a validated prototype, a concise experimental analysis highlighting practical trade-offs in the design of RAG systems for space applications, and the submission of a scientific article to a peer-reviewed journal or conference.
5. Applicable Legislation
The award and contracting of the grant shall comply with the Statute of the Research Grant Holder (Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current wording) and with the Regulation of Research Grants of NOVA University Lisbon, approved by Dispatch No. 9484/2023.
