NOTICE OF for 1 (one) Research studentship (BI), for the project “NATVALUE: VALORIZAÇÃO SUSTENTÁVEL DA NATUREZA” (NORTE2030-FEDER-01193500), COFINANCIADO PELO FUNDO EUROPEU DE DESENVOLVIMENTO REGIONAL (FEDER) ATRAVÉS DO PROGRAMA REGIONAL DO NORTE 2021-2027 [NORTE2030], AT FACULDADE DE ECONOMIA DA UNIVERSIDADE DO PORTO (FEP)


This competition is now open for the award of one (1) Research Grant (BI) to a student enrolled in a doctoral programme to carry out R&D activities within the scope of the project "NATVALUE: Sustainable valorisation of nature", with reference (Ref NORTE2030-FEDER-01193500), co-financed by the European Union through the NORTE 2030 Regional Programme, Portugal 2030, and underway at the Mathematics and Information Systems Group of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, under the following conditions:


1. Research area: Information Systems.


2. Admission requirements:

To apply for the research studentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:

  1. Hold a degree in computer science, or a Master's degree in Data Science, Economics, Management, or related fields. [1];
  2. Be a student enrolled in a doctoral program in Computer Engineering or Computer Science - a requirement to be duly proven at the time of hiring. 2;


3. Preferred requirements:

  1. Experience using deep-learning algorithms.
  2. In-depth knowledge of Python and PyTorch.
  3. Previous experience collaborating on scientific projects.
  4. • Publications on deep-learning topics.


4. Work Plan:

4.1. The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:

  1. Definition of the methodology for Natural Capital Accounting;
  2. Definition of a standard valuation model by KPI for the assessment of the impacts and dependencies of companies on Natural Capital;
  3. Validation in pilot organizations and areas;
  4. Evaluation of existing compliance;
  5. Development of the service certification framework;
  6. Development of a blockchain-based solution for conducting transactions;
  7. Testing and experimentation of the NC Trading System;
  8. Definition of monitoring indicators.
  9. Preparation of project reports as well as writing of scientific articles relating to points a) and h).


4.2. When the academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the studentship contracts, the studentship may continue as long as the activities provided for in the work plan have not been completed and under the terms specifically provided for in the call for applications and in the contract, in accordance with Article 10(6) of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation.


5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:

The call for applications and the respective award of the studentship are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation - approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in Diário da República, 2.ª Série, n. 43, 03rd March, hereinafter referred to as the Regulations no. 43, of 03rd March; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 7th January; the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, in the current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28th August and; other applicable rules.


6. Workplace:

The work plan will be developed at the Mathematics and Information Systems Group of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto and other locations necessary for implementation, under the scientific supervision of Professor Doctor Bruno Miguel Delindro Veloso, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto.


7. Duration:

The studentship BI will have a duration of 12 months, on a full-time basis, and may be renewed for equal or different periods after a positive evaluation, up to the limit of the work plan or funding period, in accordance with Article 10(3) of the Regulation.


8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:

8.1. The monthly maintenance allowance for the studentship is 1309,64€, in accordance with Annex I of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation.

8.2. Payment will be made by Faculdade de Economia da Universidade do Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the studentship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.

8.3. The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.


9. Evaluation methods:

9.1. The selection methods are as follows: curricular assessment (AC – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 60% and, optionally, complemented by an interview (ENT – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 40%, which will only take place when the Jury considers that the AC does not allow it to clarify, in the intended manner, the real competences of the candidates or to distinguish which candidate is best suited to the position and functions to be performed. If this is the case, the interview will be carried out with the 3 (three) candidates best classified in the AC.

9.2. Each member of the Jury will assess the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.

9.3. The criteria and weighting factors for curriculum assessment (CA) are:

a) Average degree or average master's degree or weighted average by ECTS of the UCs completed in the master's degree to date (from 0 to 5 points); 10-12 average marks: 1 point; 13-14 average marks: 2 points; 15-16 average marks: 3 points; 17-18 average marks: 4 points; 19-20 average: 5 points

b) Professional experience (0 to 5 points); 0-1 year of experience: 1 point; 1-2 years of experience: 2 points; 2-3 years of experience: 3 points; 3-4 years of experience: 4 points; +4 years of experience: 5 points

c) Scientific publications in the field of DL (0 to 5 points); [1 publication: 1 point; 2 publications: 2 points; 3 publications: 3 points; +4 publications: 5 points]

d) Motivation demonstrated in the motivation letter (0 to 5 points).).

9.4. The following are the criteria and weighting factors for the interview (ENT), should it be held:

  1. Motivation exhibited by the applicant (0 to 10 points);
  2. Oral communication (0 to 10 points).

9.5. The candidates may ask the President of the Jury to authorize their interview to be conducted by videoconference, stating the reasons for this.

9.6. Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawing from the competition, and applicants will be excluded from the competition.

9.7. The Final Classification (CF - abbreviation in Portuguese) will be obtained by applying the following formula: CF = (0,6*AC) + (0,4*ENT).

9.8. This competition is intended exclusively to fill the vacancy indicated. In the event that no candidate demonstrates that they have the profile required to fulfil the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Jury reserves the right not to award the position.


10. Selection panel:

1st effective member – Doctor Rita Paula Almeida Ribeiro, Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto;

2nd effective member – Doctor Carlos Manuel Abreu Gomes Ferreira, Coordinating Professor of the Computer Engineering Department at ISEP;

Substitute member – Doctor Maria Eduarda da Rocha Pinto Augusto da Silva, Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto;

Substitute member – Doctor Pedro Henriques Abreu, Professor da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Coimbra.


11. Submission of applications:

11.1. The candidates must submit their application by 20 of March, 2026 (local time - Lisbon).

11.2 Candidates must access and register on the electronic platform https://www.apply.up.pt to submit their application, selecting the procedure for which they wish to apply (Ref. BOLS-FEP-26-1). Applications are submitted by completing the sections available on the APPLY UP platform, under ‘My application’.

11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:

  1. Curriculum vitae;
    1. Motivation letter, indicating availability to start the work plan and a maximum of 500 words;
    2. Copy of the required qualification certificate(s) and degree recognition if obtained from a foreign higher education institution (this recognition may be submitted up until the time of hiring);
  2. Proof of enrolment in a doctoral programme or a sworn statement certifying that you meet the enrolment requirements and that you will submit proof of enrolment by the time of hiring;Statement of eligibility (attached).

11.4. The candidates may also attach any other documents they feel are relevant to assessing their merit.

11.5. Failure to comply with the application submission deadline, failure to submit or late submission of the documents referred to in points a) to e) of paragraph 11.3. will result in the application being excluded.

11.6. For the purposes of evaluating applications, no documents accessed via links will be considered, with the exception of those referring to publications with a DOI.

11.7. The documents mentioned in point 11.3. should preferably be submitted in a non-editable format.

11.8. The Jury may, whenever it deems necessary, request candidates to submit additional documents relating to the facts referred to in the curriculum vitae submitted, setting a deadline for this purpose, under the following terms:

a) the documentation referred to is not intended for the presentation of elements not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the addition of missing documents required in this Notice;

b) all candidates shall be informed that additional documentation has been requested.


12. False declarations:

False statements made by candidates will be penalized in accordance with the law.


13. Notification of results:

13.1. Notifications are made by publication on the Apply UP electronic platform, pursuant to Article 112(1)(c) of the CPA, and take effect pursuant to Article 113 of the CPA.

13.2. Pursuant to the provisions of Article 121 et seq. of the CPA, after notification, candidates have 10 working days to respond in writing.


14. Booking list:

A booking list will be drawn up on the basis of the final ranking list, which may be used in the event of the first-placed candidate withdrawing. The Faculty's highest authority reserves the right to call the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 6 months from the date of publication of this Notice.
