Introduction to the vacant position:

The Nonlinear Photonics for Neuroscience (NPN) group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoc researcher to join our research on optical technologies for neuroscience.

Our group focuses on the development of next-generation microscopy tools that enable high-resolution imaging and manipulation of neuronal activity. As part of the ERC PoC Grant “NeuroBridge”, the selected candidate will work on transforming standard two-photon microscopes, already routinely used in neuroscience, into versatile platforms to study natural behavior paradigms.

The successful candidate will become part of an interdisciplinary team and receive training in the latest optical technologies developed by the NPN group. The project offers a unique opportunity to develop a diverse skill set spanning optical system design and engineering, software implementation, and neuroscience applications. Collaborations with neuroscience groups and imaging platforms within the Barcelona area will be a key part of the project.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

• • Optical System Design: Simulate, design, and develop optical modules that can be installed into existing commercial microscopes. Cost minimization and ease of operations will be key feature to disseminate the technology.
• • Software design: together with an IT engineer in the group, new software solutions to interface the new modules with preexisting architectures will be explored.
• • Manage collaborations with neuroscientists and imaging platform: this will allow timely testing of the new devices
• • Experimental Validation: Conduct in vitro and in vivo experiments to assess and optimize microscope performance.
• • Scientific Dissemination: Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at leading international conferences.

Requirements for candidates:

Essential:

• • Education: PhD degree in Physics, Photonics, Optics, or a related field, completed prior to the start of the contract.
• • Technical Expertise: Solid understanding of optical design, alignment, and optical microscopy. Proficiency in programming with Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
• • Scientific Motivation: Strong interest in applying advanced optical techniques to neuroscience or related biological research.
• • Core Competencies: Proactive, collaborative, and solution-oriented mindset with excellent communication skills, particularly in interdisciplinary environments.
• • Language Proficiency: Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Advantageous:

• • Previous experience in two-photon microscopy
• • Previous experience in ultrafast pulse compression
• • Previous experience in advanced optical design
• • Experience working in international research teams or institutions.

• • 2 years open-ended contract for scientific and technical activities, linked to the project and budget duration, renewable at the end of the term.
