Opening of an international selection procedure for the recruitment of a PhD holder within the context of the project RESONANCE: Epistemologies for the Documentation of Affect and Becoming in Cultural Manifestations in Performance (1969-1979), supported by the Lisboa 2030 Regional Programme, Portugal 2030, and the European Union (LISBOA2030-FEDER-00914500), and co-funded by national funds through FCT ― Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I. P. (2023.17624.ICDT).

 

Alexandra Curvelo, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH), hereby makes it public that an international selection procedure for the recruitment of a PhD holder, through an open-ended employment contract at the NOVA University of Lisbon - Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, is now open, for a period of 10 working days, to carry out scientific investigation activities as part of the project RESONANCE: Epistemologies for the Documentation of Affect and Becoming in Cultural Manifestations in Performance (1969-1979), funded through Lisbon’s Regional Programme LISBOA 2030, by Portugal 2030 and by the European Union (LISBOA2030-FEDER-00914500), and co-funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology with national funds (2023.17624.ICDT).

The opening of this call, as well as the appointment of the selection panel, were authorised by order of the Deputy Dean for Research of NOVA FCSH, Professor Sónia Vespeira de Almeida, under delegated authority, dated 26 June 2026, following a favourable opinion of the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH dated 15 June 2026.

 

1 - Hiring the doctoral candidate will be carried out under Decree Law No. 57/2016, of 29 August, as amended by Law No. 57/2017, of 19 July, which approves a system for hiring PhD holders to stimulate scientific and technological employment in all areas of knowledge (REC), the Labour Code, approved by Law No. 7/2009, of 12 February, in its current wording and Implementing Decree No. 11-A/2017, of 29 December.

     - The PhD holder shall be contracted under an open-ended employment contract by legal imperative, under the terms of subparagraph b) of paragraph 1 of article 6 of the RJEC, ex vi, paragraph 2 of article 18 of the RJEC, and shall only remain in force for the period necessary to carry out the tasks specified in the project and identified in the following paragraph. 

3 - Description of the vacancy: 

The position now open for application aims to select a PhD researcher to develop a historical and/or cultural research project in the field of archives and practices of the performing arts created in Portugal between the 1960s and the 1980s. Specifically, the project must align with the scope of the RESONANCE project, and the PhD researcher to be hired will be responsible for designing an innovative and coherent plan for knowledge production in this field, identifying case studies to be explored over a period of two years, and providing for the dissemination of results in indexed journal(s) with international impact.

The researcher to be hired must possess and be able to demonstrate research skills and experience in the field of the research project.

- Under article 2 of Implementing Decree no. 11-A/2017, of 29 December, the contract to be signed will have a base-level remuneration of € 2.408,11€, in accordance with level 33 of the first remuneratory position.

5 - The place of work is located at IHA - Instituto de História da Arte, situated at the Colégio Almada Negreiros – Campus de Campolide, 1099-032, and/or at other places necessary to undertake the researcher’s activities.

6 - National, foreign and stateless candidates can apply holding a PhD degree in Artistic Studies, Communication Sciences, Conservation and Restoration, History, Art History, or related fields, with a scientific and professional curriculum that demonstrates a profile suitable for the activity to be carried out.

- The selection of the PhD holder to be hired is carried out through assessment of the scientific and curricular background of the candidates in the selection process.

a) The scientific, cultural, and artistic output of the last five years, considered most relevant by the candidate and duly identified in the CV, associated with the position under application; candidates must identify one significant publication; b) The scientific or scientific-adjancent activities carried out over the last five years that are related to the scope specified for the position under application; c) The research plan to achieve the objectives associated with the performance of the position under application, namely by indicating case-studies, archives, and/or relevant approaches. Scientific, cultural, and artistic output and associated activities that are not directly related to the position under application, as described in paragraph 3 of this Notice, will not be considered for evaluation purposes.

8 - The five-year period referred to in the preceding paragraph may be extended by the Jury, at the candidate’s request, when justified by suspension of scientific activity for socially protected reasons, namely for reasons of parental leave, prolonged serious illness, and other situations of unavailability for work that are legally protected.

— The candidate grading system is expressed on a scale of 0 to 100 points. The Curricular Evaluation method will be applied, based on the following assessment criteria:

a. Curriculum evaluation of the elements considered most relevant by the jury in relation to the position under application (0–45 points);

b. Activities considered by the jury to have the greatest impact in relation to the position under application, taking into account professional experience within the scope of the activities specified in point 3 (0–35 points);

c. Research Plan proposed by the candidate (0–20 points).

11 - The application process must be accompanied, under penalty of exclusion, by the following documents

a) Submission of the application form (available at https://www.fcsh.unl.pt/content/uploads/2020/02/Formul%C3%A1rio-de-Candidatura_Application-Form-Researcher.pdf) where the present procedure is explicitly mentioned;

b) Copy of the certificate attesting the degree of Doctor. If the degree has been awarded by foreign higher education institutions, a Declaration of Honour in accordance with the specific pro forma (available at https://fcsh.unl.pt/faculdade/concursos_para_investigadores/);

c) A copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae, organized in accordance with the systematic outline set out in paragraph 7 of this Notice;

d) Research project (maximum of 500 words);

e) Cover Letter, explaining how the candidate’s scientific, artistic, and curricular background is suited to the position under application.

12 - Applications should be accompanied, under penalty of exclusion, with the documents mentioned above and should be sent within 10 working days from the day following the publication of this Notice in the Official Gazette Diário da República, to the email address [email protected]. The subject of the email should indicate the reference in the Notice and the documents should preferably be in PDF format. 

In case of doubt, the selection board may require any candidate to produce documents supporting their statements. 

False statements made by candidates will be punished in accordance with the law.

 

Candidates are excluded from admission to the vacancy procedure if they formalise their application incorrectly or do not prove the requirements indicated for the present vacancy procedure.

13 - The selected candidate must have obtained a minimum score of 75 points.

14 - If the PhD of the selected candidate has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, its recognition shall follow the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the signing the contract. 

The candidate ranked immediately after the first ranked candidate will be invited to the position under consideration, when the academic degree of the PhD holder is not recognised after the above-mentioned formalities have been completed.
