Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the Department of Economics, University of Bergen. The position is for a period of four years, of which 25% is career development work at the Department. 

The Department of Economics is one of seven departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department offers bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees in economics. Research and teaching at the Department cover a broad spectrum of sub-disciplines in economics. About the project/work tasks:

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the Department’s existing research and education profiles.

The work tasks will include:

  • • conducting an independent research project in economics
  • • publishing research in international peer-reviewed journals
  • • contributing actively to the research environment at the Department
  • • teaching and supervision at the bachelor’s and master’s levels
  • • other academic and administrative tasks at the Department

The normal teaching load is one course per year.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree in economics or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded before the date of commencement of the position.
  • • The applicant must have a strong academic background in economics.
  • • Particular emphasis will be placed on documented research quality and publication potential, for example through publications in good international peer-reviewed journals, papers with revise-and-resubmit status, or completed article drafts assessed to have strong potential for publication in such journals.
  • • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • • Proficiency in both written and oral Norwegian and/or English is required. Knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language would be an advantage.
  • • The place of work for this position is Bergen, and the work requires that the successful candidate is physically present at the Department on a regular basis.

Potential candidates may be invited to the Department for an interview and may be asked to hold a trial lecture on a given topic.

The successful candidate is expected to live and work in Bergen and participate in common activities at the Department.

The teaching language is normally Norwegian.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is 4 years. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the project/centre manager. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

  • • Gross annual salary as Postdoctoral research fellow, code 1352, of NOK 685 900, -. Further increase in salary will depend on seniority. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.

  • • List of any works of a scientific nature (publication list).
  • • Up to 5 publications.
