We are looking for a
Research Assistant in Machine Learning and Multimodal Digital Biomarkers with a focus on voice biomarkers, wearable sensing technologies, and performance monitoring, at the Department of computer science and Media technology, Faculty of Technology and Society.
Subject area
The Research Assistant is to support a research project developing a machine learning-driven multimodal performance monitoring framework for assessing physical and mental workload in high-performance training environments.
The project investigates how wearable sensors, IoT technologies, environmental sensing, mobile applications, digital biomarkers, and machine learning can be integrated to enable continuous and objective monitoring of human performance. A particular focus is on voice biomarkers as a non-invasive and scalable approach for assessing stress, fatigue, cognitive workload, recovery, and performance readiness. Voice data will be combined with physiological, movement, environmental, and self-reported measures to enhance workload assessment and performance analytics.
This interdisciplinary position combines machine learning, wearable computing, sensor fusion, signal processing, speech analytics, human-computer interaction, and performance analytics.
Job description
- • Conduct literature reviews on wearable sensing, digital biomarkers, voice biomarkers, sports analytics, IoT systems, machine learning, and multimodal data fusion.
- • Support the design and implementation of experimental systems involving wearable devices, mobile technologies, voice data collection, and environmental sensors.
- • Assist in collecting, synchronizing, and managing multimodal datasets including physiological, movement, environmental, voice, and self-reported data.
- • Contribute to the development and evaluation of machine learning models for physical and mental workload assessment.
- • Support data preprocessing, feature engineering, speech and signal processing, and exploratory analysis of multimodal sensor data.
- • Assist in the development of dashboards and mobile-based visualization tools for performance monitoring and feedback.
- • Help develop computational frameworks for individualized workload assessment, trend analysis, digital biomarker discovery, and performance profiling.
- • Contribute to scientific publications, technical reports, and dissemination activities.
Qualification requirement
Qualification requirements refer to requirements that must be met for an applicant to be considered for employment.
A research assistant must have a completed a degree on advanced level or equivalent expertise.
It is a general qualification requirement for teachers at Malmö University that the candidate is appropriate for and have the ability in general required to fully complete the duties of the relevant position.
Additional qualification requirements for this position are:
- • Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Embedded Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, Sports Technology, or related discipline.
- • Strong programming and software development skills.
- • Demonstrated knowledge or practical experience in one or more of the following areas: Machine Learning and Data AnalyticsWearable Technologies and Sensor SystemsSignal Processing and Time-Series AnalysisSpeech Processing or Voice AnalyticsMobile Application DevelopmentHuman-Computer Interaction and User-Centered Design
- • Experience working with Python and data analysis tools.
- • Strong communication and scientific writing skills in English.
- • Ability to work independently and collaborate in interdisciplinary teams.
- • Applicants must have a valid work permit or legal right to work in Sweden.
The position is campus-based and requires regular on-site presence; it is not a remote position
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria refer to criteria for assessing how well an applicant meets a certain qualification requirement and criteria that have otherwise been deemed significant for the position.
The overall assessment includes proficiency in the specific field relevant to the position.
For this position, the following will also be assessed:
- • Experience with physiological signal analysis (e.g., heart rate, HRV, respiration, accelerometry, electrodermal activity).
- • Experience with speech analytics, voice processing, or voice-based digital biomarkers.
- • Knowledge of multimodal data fusion and sensor integration.
- • Experience with machine learning techniques for classification, clustering, anomaly detection, or predictive modeling.
- • Familiarity with self-supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and longitudinal data analysis.
- • Experience with wearable devices, sports technologies, mobile health platforms, or digital biomarker research.
- • Knowledge of privacy-preserving analytics and trustworthy machine learning.
- • Previous experience contributing to academic research projects and scientific publications.
