Department of International Economics, Government & Business (EGB) invites applications for a vacant position for a 2.25-year (27 months) postdoc of which 10 months will be teaching in Business and Government. The postdoc will be part of a work package for the project “Enhancing Democratic Support under Conditions of Geographic and Intersectional Inequalities in Europe” (EDGE). The work package is led by associate professor Mads Dagnis Jensen and funded by the Horizon Europe call: “HORIZON-CL2-2025-01-DEMOCRACY-08 - Economic inequalities and their impact on democracy”. The project is co-led by Prof Alexia Katsanidou, GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences and Prof Sofia Vasilopoulou, King’s College London. The postdoc will be based at the Department of International Economics, Government and Business (EGB) at Copenhagen Business School. 
 

EGB is a multidisciplinary department that conducts high-quality research in the fields of international business and political science with direct relevance to business, policymakers and the public. Research at the department focuses on two principal focus areas Business & Government and International Business, in relation to societal challenges. These challenges include the consequences of inequality; the impact of technological change and digital transformation; the ethical dilemmas facing MNEs, regulatory challenges, the changes brought about by emerging markets and the rise of Asia; the consequences of global shifts for public policy, and the relationship between business and democracy. We have a large group of faculty committed to examining the role of money in politics and non-market strategy. Faculty apply advanced quantitative and qualitative methods to generate systematic knowledge about business-government relations and international business relations. The project

The EDGE project addresses a central challenge for the future of democracy: how are economic inequalities - both objective and subjective - related to European citizens’ democratic support? It aims: first, to advance knowledge on the mechanisms through which different types of inequality undermine or, under certain conditions, reinforce democratic support; and second, to causally assess policy interventions to identify efficient solutions that strengthen democracy across diverse territorial and social contexts. The project integrates geographic and intersectional perspectives to show how personal experiences, social identities, and territorial contexts interact with media and digital networks in shaping perceptions of inequality and democratic support.

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the development of EDGE’s theoretical framework on how objective and subjective economic inequalities shape democratic support. The role involves conducting systematic literature reviews, organizing town hall activities with embedded experiments, and helping translate these insights into research design and policy-relevant outputs. The postdoc will also analyse cross-national survey data to examine how different forms of inequality relate to support for democratic principles and values, and how these relationships vary across territorial contexts and social identities. The position includes research on the impact of targeted policies on geographic and intersectional inequalities, including the use of linked register and survey data to assess how policy exposure influences democratic support.

The postdoc will be a full part of a team conducting research within the project and co-author multiple academic articles. Strong abilities to work on research in a team and collaborate/co-author with other team members is essential for the position.

Some skills and research interests that we are looking for in the applicants:

• • Strong theoretical and empirical knowledge about inequality (required)
• • Strong skills in quantitative methods with a focus on register data (required)
• • Working with large datasets, including cross-walking different datasets (required)
• • Experimental methods especially related to town halls (desired)

During the 27 months of employment, the position is devoted to 17 months of research and 10 months of teaching obligation. The postdoc is expected to focus their work on the EDGE project, but time can be set aside to finish previous projects. The postdoc is expected to start in December of 2026.

Qualifications

The applicant must have completed – or be close to completing – a PhD in the political science, political economy, economics, or a related field. The applicant must have excellent research and excellent professional proficiency in English (written and spoken). The applicant must have excellent skills in quantitative methods, including experience in working with large datasets.

To fulfill the research requirements of the position, the postdoc is expected to be physically present at the department on a regular basis.

Recruitment procedure

The Recruitment Committee will shortlist a minimum of two applicants; when possible five or more applicants will be shortlisted. The shortlisted applicants will be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline.

The applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.
