Research on the corrosion processes to obtain correlations between the monitored parameters of corrosion processes of construction materials and chemical and structural characteristics of the components in the melt.

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position focused on corrosion studies of advanced materials, including alloys, binary compounds, and ceramics, in high-temperature corrosive environments of molten salts. The project aims to identify and characterize corrosion-resistant materials and develop innovative corrosion testing methods.


Key Aspects:


  1. Static Corrosion Tests:
    • Investigate the dependence of corrosion behavior on the concentration of specific components in molten environments.
    • Identify materials with superior corrosion resistance by studying their interaction with various melt compositions.
    • Compare corroded materials with their initial states to evaluate material durability.

  2. Dynamic Corrosion Testing:
    • Extend static tests to long-term studies, examining the kinetics of material dissolution as a function of corrosive components concentrations.
    • Implement an accelerated corrosion testing regime by simulating long-term effects through the introduction of expected corrosion products, providing comprehensive data on material compatibility with molten systems.

  3. Surface and Cross-Sectional Analysis:
    • Perform detailed surface observations using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping to study corrosion mechanisms.
    • Analyze cross-sectional samples to determine the extent of the corrosion layer and its influence on material structure.
    • Use line-scan elemental analysis by SEM to map the distribution of soluble components within the material and assess substitution processes.
    • Employ a combination of advanced methods such as SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and micro-X-ray diffraction (micro-XRD) for the thorough characterization of corrosion products and material degradation.


This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of corrosion science and to work with a multidisciplinary team on developing next-generation materials for high-performance applications.


Offer starting date: 01/04/2025 (or later)

Duration: min. 24 months up to 36 months

Salary: 2 500 EURO/month brutto
