This is a full-time research position (39 months) in the project “Cognitive flexibility, cognitive load, and interpreting performance in simultaneous interpreters as a function of age” led by Karolina Broś, funded by National Science Centre Poland (NCN). 

The goal of the project is to study the impact of aging on the cognitive abilities of interpreters, with a particular focus on their cognitive flexibility. Real-time translation requires a high level of concentration, switching between languages and adapting to different speakers, accents and topics. Although a great deal of research has been conducted on interpreters to date, little is still known about the impact of age on performance, cognitive load and mental capacity in this occupational group. To fill this gap, we will study interpreters of different ages (from 30 to 70) using a series of cognitive tests (working memory tests, Wisconsin Sorting Card Task test measuring cognitive flexibility) and an eye-tracking experiment measuring cognitive load under different interpreting conditions. The interpreting output will be evaluated using artificial intelligence-based tools. This will help us learn 1) how interpreters' brains respond to different levels of text difficulty depending on age; 2) how the ability to adapt and switch between languages changes with age; and 3) how age affects the quality and accuracy of interpreting.

The job will be based at the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw, ul. Dobra 55, Warsaw, Poland.

Conducting research tasks in the project, including:

1. The design and preparation an eye-tracking study and a battery of cognitive tests jointly with the Principal Investigator
2. Conducting the eye-tracking study and cognitive tests with participants and analysing the results together with the Principal Investigator
3. Coordinating tasks and subsequent project steps with other team members.
4. Drawing up research results in the form of scientific publications
5. Presentation of research results at scientific conferences
