Professorship in Medieval History and Auxiliary Sciences of Historical Research (W2 with tenure track leading to W3)



Academic context
The Chair of Medieval History and Auxiliary Sciences of Historical Research is part of the Department of History at Leipzig University. The Department boasts fifteen professorships and enjoys an excellent integration into the Leipzig research landscape, making it a highly conducive working environment. The Chair of Medieval History and Auxiliary Sciences of Historical Research is equipped with a research unit for Auxiliary Sciences of Historical Research, which is co-financed by Leipzig University and the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and intended to connect both institutions.


Duties
The Chair of Medieval History and Auxiliary Sciences of Historical Research covers the entire period of the Middle Ages in both research and teaching, with a geographical focus on Latin Europe and its contact zones. The future holder of the chair will be involved in cross-disciplinary research projects, embracing cross-cultural approaches and digital methods, and contributing to the research profile area 'Global Interrelations and Comparisons'. They will advance the field of auxiliary sciences of historical research and will be committed to further developing university teaching and curricula. Their duties will also include participation in academic administration.


Requirements
The future chair is expected to hold a "Habilitation" or an equivalent academic qualification in medieval history. They is recognised for outstanding research in the field of medieval history, including auxiliary sciences of historical research. They will have a record of innovative research that align with the research areas of Leipzig University. They are expected to be experienced in acquiring third-party funding, with a track record in managing large research projects. They are expected to provide proof of advanced teaching experience in higher education and will be keen to cooperate with other research and teaching teams.


Our offer
The professorship is initially limited to six years. No later than in the fifth year of employment, a tenure evaluation will be conducted under the Regulations on the Constitution, Procedure and Evaluation of Tenure Track Professorships at Leipzig University (TTO). The evaluation procedure is based on a binding, mutual evaluation agreement concluded at the start of employment, which sets out the development goals and expectations with regard to the professor’s individual performance in the categories of research, teaching, knowledge transfer as well as academic and non-university commitment. After successful tenure evaluation, appointment to a permanent W3-professorship pursuant to Section 60 (3) of the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) will take place without readvertising the vacancy.
The job holder’s rights and obligations are regulated by the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) and the Saxon Service Regulations for Higher Education Institutions (HSDAVO). Applicants must meet the requirements of § 59 SächsHSG.
