The Faculty of History, Art and Area Studies seeks to fill the following professorship by 1 October 2026:

Professorship in Archaeology of the Ancient Mediterranean and its Environment (W2)

Academic Context
The professorship forms a cornerstone of the Faculty’s diverse research and teaching profile in cultural and intellectual history. Other disciplines within the field of Ancient Studies represented at the Faculty and the University – such as Digital Archaeology of Central Europe, Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Ancient History, Classical Philology (Greek and Latin), and Byzantine Studies – offer excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary academic collaboration. The University’s Museum of Antiquities and its associated cast collection provide distinguished resources for the study and teaching of ancient material culture, and play a significant role in the dialogue between scholarship and the wider public.

Duties
The duties of the professorship include research and teaching in accordance with the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) and with the applicable regulations on academic service obligations (Hochschuldienstaufgabenverordnung), as well as active engagement in academic self-administration.

Requirements
Applicants must hold a doctorate relevant to the field as well as a Habilitation or equivalent academic achievements. A broad thematic expertise with international visibility is essential, encompassing material culture, visual and textual sources, landscapes, and biofacts. A research focus on human-environment interactions in antiquity is expected, along with demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to and further develop the new degree programmes in Ancient Studies „B.A. Archäologie, Sprachen und Geschichte früher Kulturen“ (“B.A. Archaeology, Languages and History of Ancient Cultures”) and „M.A. Mensch-Umwelt-Archäologie“ (“M.A. Human-Environment Archaeology”).
Experience in the design and management of archaeological projects and in securing third-party funding is desirable. A strong commitment to collaboration with other disciplines in Ancient Studies at Leipzig University, the university’s collections, and non-university research institutions is expected. Relevant experience in such cooperative ventures is welcomed. Applicants should be willing to expand international collaborations in research and teaching, and demonstrate experience in these areas.

Our offer
The job holder’s rights and obligations are regulated by the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) and the Saxon Service Regulations for Higher Education Institutions (HSDAVO). Applicants must meet the requirements of § 59 SächsHSG.
Research, teaching, transfer, infrastructure and administration require a diversity of perspectives. The university is therefore committed to diversity and equal opportunities. We welcome your application, regardless of gender, nationality, religion, cultural and social background, age or sexual orientation. The university aims to increase the proportion of women in academia and therefore expressly encourages qualified women to apply.

Severely disabled persons – or persons deemed legally equal to them under Book IX of the German Social Code – are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in the case of equal suitability. If you have any questions about accessibility or need assistance with this application process, please contact Leipzig University’s disability officers at: schwerbehindertenvertretung@uni-leipzig.de.

Please apply by 4th July 2025 exclusively via Leipzig University’s recruitment portal: www.uni-leipzig.de/berufungen.
