Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Algebraic and Symplectic Geometry at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mathematics and Physics. The position is vacant from January 2026.

The aim of the position is for the successful candidate to develop a research profile and gain the qualifications required to be eligible for a position as an Associate Professor. Additionally, the position may provide valuable experience and other competencies relevant to the postdoctoral researcher’s career development.

Postdoctoral Fellow is employed for a period of three years.

The position is funded by The Research Council of Norway.

The qualifying project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that they will participate in the academic community.

Research topic

The postdoctoral Fellow will be affiliated with the project "Fano manifolds, wall structures and torus fibrations" (Shape2030) funded by the Norwegian Research Council. Building on prior work of successful ERC and EPSRC projects centered at the Imperial College London, Shape2030 is designed to turn Stavanger in Norway into a leading research community for research on Fano manifolds.

Fano manifolds and more generally log Calabi-Yau manifolds lie at the heart of the enumerative mirror symmetry conjecture (EMS), the homological mirror symmetry conjecture (HMS) and the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture (SYZ). Using novel cutting edge techniques from logarithmic and tropical geometry, Shape2030 will make substantial progress on these conjectures and aim to solve EMS and SYZ. To enable the progress, new insights about mirror symmetry, mutations, degenerations, wall structures and torus fibrations will be used. Wall structures appear in bases of singular Lagrangian fibrations, in enumerative geometry as well as for stability manifolds and their twistor space constructions.

Extended motivation letter

You must submit a description of your research expertise and explanation about how that fits into the Shape2030 topics. The letter should include proposed ideas about how you will proceed to solve key mathematical problems, what the working hypotheses will be and what theories and methods you will apply. It must be clear from the application in what way the postdoctoral project will add to your competence and scientific development. The motivation letter will be included in the competence assessment.

The final project description and progress plan are drawn up in consultation with the supervisor during the first three months of the employment period. It is a prerequisite that you complete the project during the employment period.

Qualification requirements

You must have a PhD with a specialisation relevant for the project. The PhD thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.

You must have a good command of both oral and written English.

In the assessment the following criteria will be emphasised:

  • - submitted scientific work and your personal skills for completing the project within the time frame
  • - international experience and network
