Job description:

We invite highly motivated researchers with a strong background in algorithmic optimization and mathematical systems theory to apply for an open PhD position in the ICTEAM Institute at the University of Louvain.

You will join the team of Prof. Gianluca Bianchin, on the project titled “Optimization for Shared Green Transport.” You will contribute to a research project focused on transforming transportation systems through the development of eco-conscious algorithms for route planning, leveraging shared and multi-modal mobility. The project aims at developing a new paradigm in how we plan and operate transportation systems, seeking an environment-centric approach where short transit times and quick deliveries are traded in favor of more eco-conscious transportation.

You will implement, design, and analyze mathematically advanced optimization and machine learning algorithms to compute routes that minimize environmental impact, incorporating real-time data for dynamic and adaptive planning. The approach will be broadly applicable to both urban transit and logistics. A key outcome of the project will be a demonstration software platform for sustainable multi-modal route planning.

Applicants are expected to have a strong theoretical and numerical background in one or more of the following fields:

Desired qualifications:

• You have a strong mathematical background, with coursework on algorithmic optimization, control theory, (mathematical) machine learning, or related fields
• You hold a PhD degree (or are close to completion) in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
• You have good programming skills and experience (Matlab, Python, etc)

Timing:

The position will remain open until filled, but priority will be given to applications received by September 1, 2025. The start date is flexible and can be tailored based on the candidate’s availability.
