About the position

About the project
Be part of the research group on Urban Infrastructure (https://www.ntnu.edu/civil-security/urban-infrastructure) in the thematic area civil security, which aims to strengthen the resilience of urban infrastructure in a holistic way.
Urban infrastructure is a heavily interconnected and interdependent system that is affected by external factors like climate change, urbanization, and technological advances. However, current management still happens in silos, focusing on individual components instead of understanding how everything is linked. This limits the ability to adapt to changes. Also, planning often doesn't consider future uncertainties, the possibilities of IoT, or how one failure in the system can lead to a chain reaction of other failures.
Duties of the position
- Carry out research of high quality
- Academic publications and popular science dissemination
- Participate in the research group Water and wastewater systems engineering (https://www.ntnu.edu/ibm/water-and-wastewater-engineering)
- Apply for research funding and write applications and report on progress to funding sources
- Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions
- Teaching
- Mentoring students, helping them with their research projects, and advising on methodology and academic writing
- Participate in the organization of the research group and act as link between the different disciplines that are participating
Required selection criteria
- You must have completed a doctoral degree in urban water systems engineering or related fields
- A strong publication track record with publications in relevant research areas in credible journals and conferences
- Knowledge and relevant project experience with the modelling of urban water systems
- Experience with Python for advanced programming, both design and planning, as well as programming. Additional programming language (e.g. C++, VB) is a plus
- Experience in working on research projects on a national and European level
- Good oral and written presentation skills in English equivalent level

If you do not already have educational competence that meets the requirements for a position as associate professor in Norway, NTNU will arrange for you to acquire such competence during the employment period. In such cases, you will also be assigned relevant teaching as part of the career-promoting work.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with NTNUs guidelines for recruitment positions and Regulations concerning the degrees of philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)for general criteria for the position.
Preferred selection criteria
- Motivation and willingness for interdisciplinary research and teaching
- Experience with water infrastructure modelling with a focus on computational methods
- A strong link to the topic interdependence and cascading effects in Urban infrastructure Systems.
- A strong background in systems thinking, analysis and modelling
- Experience in teaching and supervision in higher education at least on MSc level
- Knowledge of graph theoretical approaches and graph signal processing
- Experience with data management including computational techniques for data quality control, data imputation, data models, data sharing and metadata
- Used to interdisciplinary work and strong communication and organizational skills
- Good oral and written presentation skills in Norwegian/Scandinavian

Salary and conditions
As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 633 400,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years.

For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.
If you have had leave or another break in your career, it is important that this is stated in your application so that the selection committee can take this into account and that the amount of your research may be reduced as a result.
In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal qualities. Motivation, ambitions and potential for research will also be emphasized in the assessment of the candidates.
