Training Science

The position will become available in the Department of Sport and Excercise Science at the Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences at the earliest possible date (at the earliest March 1, 2026).

The Department of Sport and Exercise Science contributes to the development of a valuable exercise and sports culture on a scientifically sound basis. Important topics include the significance of movement and sport for improving the quality of life of people of all ages and stages of development, optimising people’s performance and recovery abilities, researching suitable conditions for movement and sport, and optimising the equipment used for sports. Inseparably linked to this is the question of how to best teach exercise and sports, especially in the context of school sports, but also for other target groups. This results in a well-founded research programme, high-quality degree programmes, and concise job profiles for sports scientists, training therapists, and teachers of exercise and sports, see also https://www.plus.ac.at/spowi/fachbereich/leitbild/.

The professorship represents the field of training science in teaching and research. Applicants are expected to have sound professional and didactic skills as well as proven research expertise in the areas of training, monitoring, and individual load management in sports in a broad range (e.g., recreational, school, health, para, competitive, and elite sports) as well as in training therapy.

In teaching, these subject areas should be covered in their entirety in the BA and MA degree programmes in the Department of Sports and Exercise Science, in the physical education programme, in the doctoral programme in Natural and Life Sciences, and in the university course “Sports Physiotherapy.” In addition, participation in an interdisciplinary doctoral programme at the University of Salzburg is desirable.

The core subject areas of the Department of Sports and Exercise Science are divided into five working groups. The professor to be appointed will be entrusted with the leadership of working group for “Training and Motor Science”. In this context, the development of an innovative research focus in connection with the existing research topics of the working group and in cooperation with local and international research and sports institutions, such as the Olympic Center Salzburg-Rif or national and international associations, is expected.

Areas of responsibility include in particular:

• Independent scientific research and publication activity in the field of training science;
• Participation in research and teaching collaborations at the University of Salzburg and their further development;
• Active involvement in the relevant degree programmes at the University of Salzburg and doctoral education, including the supervision of theses and dissertations;
• Collaboration in university committees and in university self-administration;
• Initiation of and participation in third-party funded projects and third mission activities;
• Active participation in the European university alliance CIVIS.
