Raw earth is currently enjoying renewed interest as a construction technique due to its very low environmental impact. However, there are currently no regulatory documents describing these constructive techniques. What do exist are best practice guides, published in 2018 and developed by professionals working in the field.
In terms of the fire behavior of raw earth structures, for certain applications such as public buildings, the elements must be tested in an accredited laboratory on a 1:1 scale. This complicates and increases the cost of using raw earth, and makes these materials highly effective from an environmental point of view, but economically uncompetitive.

The aim of the MURTERFEU project is to facilitate the use of raw earth in structures requiring a fire behavior assessment. To this end, "appreciations de laboratoire" will be carried out to characterize the fire behavior of the most common raw earth structures. If a structure corresponds perfectly to the scope of the tests carried out, the fire behavior will be validated directly. If a structure is close to the scope of the laboratory assessments, the evaluation will be simplified.
