UiB - Knowledge that shapes society

Through robust and close interaction with the world around us – globally, nationally and locally – we shall be instrumental in building a society based on knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Do you want to take part in shaping the future?

Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, a full-time (100 %) position as postdoctoral research fellow is available for a period of three (3) years at the Section for epidemiology and medical statistics. The position is part of the project “Targeting the Epstein-Barr virus to treat and prevent MS (EBV-MS)”, financed by the EU programme Horizon Europe. The main aim of the project is to unveil the role of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in the onset and progression of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) disease. The position is part of an epidemiology work package which will mainly work with data from Norwegian health registries, including the Norwegian Prescribed Drug Registry (NorPD), the MS-registry, the Norwegian Patient Registry (NPR), the Norwegian Registry for Primary Health Care (KPR), socioeconomic data and data on disability pension and benefits from Statistics Norway (FD-Trygd). The work package will investigate if drugs used after an EBV-infection can predict who will develop MS later and the time from EBV-infection until MS. Further, we will investigate if drugs already on the market for other indications can have a disease modifying effect among persons who have already developed MS. The project will apply advanced methods on causal inference in observational studies. The work package is led by Assistant Professor Kjetil Lauvland Bjørnevik at Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health i Boston with Associate Professor Jannicke Igland as local principal investigator at the University of Bergen

  • Design and plan analyses
  • Make efficient analysis pipe-lines in the statistical software R for automatic statiscal analyses of a large number of associations (screening)
  • Use analytical methods within causal inference in observational studies to investigate assosiations between drug use and risk of developing MS and assosiations with prognosis among persons with MS.
  • Write scientific papers in collaboration with the research group
  • Present research data in scientific conferences
  • Supervise PhD students and master students in the research group
  • It might be possible to be a guest resarcher at Harvard School of Public Health for 6-12 months during the project period

  • The applicant should have experience with analysis of large datasets
  • The applicant must have experience with advanced methods for causal inference in observational studies, e.g. emulated target trials and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW).
  • The applicant must have substantial experience with programming in R
  • Additional experience with programming in other statistical software (Stata, SAS) is an advantage
  • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
