The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) opens a call for one (1) Post-doctoral Research Grant, in Engineering, within the R&D project/institution ECOcrete3D – Development of new concrete formulations incorporating municipal solid waste incineration slags for the construction of a house and structures by 3D printing. This call is launched under the project “ECOcrete3D – Desenvolvimento de novas formulações de betão, com incorporação de escórias de incineração de RU, para obtenção de uma habitação e de estruturas por impressão 3D”, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through R&D Incentives, under the Innovation and Digital Transition Programme (COMPETE 2030).

Admission requirements:
1st – Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Materials Engineering*
2nd – Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Materials Engineering*
3rd – PhD in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Materials Engineering, obtained no more than 3 years prior to the publication date of this call*
4th – Research experience in the field of materials engineering, with preference for candidates with experience in alkali cements (geopolymers)
5th – Publication of scientific articles in the field of alkali cements in journals indexed in the Web of Knowledge database
6th – Good command of written and spoken English
7th - Comply with the provisions of Article 7 of the FCT Grant Regulation No. 950/2019*;

Work plan:
- Update the state of the art and identify regulatory limitations for new binders to be used in mortars and concretes.
- Selection and characterization of the remaining raw materials to be used in mortars and concretes for 3D printing.
- Quantification of the reactivity of municipal solid waste incineration slags as precursors for alkaline reactions and as pozzolanic material.
- Optimization of reactivity through mechanical and physical preparation of municipal solid waste incineration slags.
- Development of 2 new optimized alkaline binders to be applied in mortars and concretes for 3D printing.
- Characterization of rheology, strength development and microstructure of the 4 new binders.
- Development and optimization of two mortars (one with alkaline binder and another with low Portland cement content) for 3D printing.
- Development and optimization of two concretes (one with alkaline binder and another with low Portland cement content) for 3D printing.
- Characterization of the fresh state of the four compositions with regard to properties required for 3D printing.
- Assessment of the robustness of mechanical and fresh-state properties of the compositions with respect to variation of constituents.
- Sustainability study and life cycle assessment (LCA) of full-scale pilots.
- Validation of the new products and 3D printing construction technology: advantages and limitations and regulatory framework for the new products.
- Co-authorship of scientific articles.
- Participation in scientific conferences.
- Organization of technical workshops.
- Delivery of a results dissemination seminar.

Workplace:
The work will be carried out at the Department of Engineering, CQ‑VR, University of Trás‑os‑Montes e Alto Douro, under the scientific guidance of Professor Nuno Miguel Cordeiro Cristelo
Duration of the fellowship(s):
The fellowship will last for 12 months, with an expected start on October/2025. The fellowship contract may be renewed, under the terms provided for in the FCT Fellowship Regulation (no. 950/2019).
Monthly maintenance allowance:
The amount of the fellowship is €1851, in accordance with the table of amounts for fellowships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Payment is monthly, by bank transfer, cheque or equivalent method.
Selection methods:
The following selection methods will be used: Curriculum assessment, Experience and Publications, and Interview, with weightings of 40%, 30% and 30%, respectively.

Form of publication/notification of results:
The final results of the evaluation will be publicized through a ranked list posted on the UTAD Campus Online Page (http://www.campus.utad.pt/bolsasinvestigacao/candidaturas ), with the candidate being approved notified via email.
Based on the final ranking list, a reserve list will be drawn up, valid for the maximum duration of the project funding this grant or the maximum duration of the grant provided for in Article 3rd , nº 2, of the Statute of Scientific Research Fellow, Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, revised by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28th August (whichever comes first), which will be used for the possible recruitment of new grant holders within the scope of this project or in the event of the first-placed candidate withdrawing. If none of the candidates demonstrates that they have the profile indicated to carry out the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship to the competition.
If the decision to be taken is unfavourable to the granting of the requested scholarship, the candidates have a period of 10 working days, after the aforementioned disclosure, to express their opinion, if desired, in a prior hearing, under the terms provided for in the Code of Administrative Procedure.
