The mission of the BRGM is to enhance geological knowledge and understanding of soil and subsoil phenomena, with one goal: to address the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects that have a real impact on society.

Within the Polluted Sites and Soils Risk Unit (RSSP) of the Risks Department (DRIS), you will participate in research activities on the optimization of non-Newtonian fluid injection for the decontamination of polluted soils.

Tests will be conducted, in 1D columns, in 2D basins, and in metric pilots, in water-saturated porous media, with different hydrogeological characteristics in terms of transmissivity, permeability, storage coefficient, and effective porosity, using water/loose rock matrices such as fine gravels and coarse sands.

In a first step, it will be a matter of studying and optimizing the vectorization as well as the ranges of action and influence of chemical additives, using physical measurements to assess flow rates, masses, pressures, apparent resistivities, and permittivities.

The effectiveness of the treatment will then be evaluated and optimized under identical conditions, using Trichloroethylene (TCE) taken as a model molecule.

In addition to physical measures, a methodology based on the analysis, in solution, of TCE and its degradation by-products will allow for the determination of the performance of reagents, using gas chromatography for the analysis of organic compounds, ionic chromatography, and selective electrodes for the analysis of chloride anions.

Potentially, surface analyses of Zero-valent Iron particles by XRD and SEM will complement the analyses.

The results of the work should be subject to scientific publication (rank A journals).
