The AVALON project focuses on designing reliable, secure and scalable wireless systems that support high-speed communications in underwater scenarios. The AVALON approach takes advantage of selected optical bands, pioneering technological advancements such as metasurfaces for ensuring uninterrupted communication in obstacle-riddled environments, and ML-based design of medium access, resource allocation and network management techniques. In terms of metasurface design and development, AVALON is targeting reconfigurable optical metasurfaces with beam-splitting and beam-steering functionalities that meet the needs of the envisioned underwater use case scenarios. The post-doctoral researcher will be responsible for the analysis and design of reconfigurable optical metasurfaces, including the physics of the supported resonances, the rigorous modeling of the tuning mechanism, and the evaluation of the wavefront manipulation performance.
