Applications are open for one (1) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BIPD) under the IC&DT project NEXTGENCOAT – New generation of polymeric coatings: more biodegradable, sustainable, and upcyclable, reference COMPETE2030-FEDER00782900, under the following conditions:

1. Scientific area: Materials Science.

2. Funding source: Supported by the budget of the Operational Programme for Innovation and Digital Transition, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) of the European Union, and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)/MCTES, I.P., through the State Budget.

3. Admission requirements: PhD in Materials Science and Engineering Physics. Proven experience in the synthesis, development, and characterization of nanomaterials with (bio)degradation, (bio)recognition, and (bio)detection properties will be valued.

If the degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution under Article 25 of Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of August 16 and Article 4(2)(e) of Decree-Law No. 60/2018 of August 3. All formalities must be completed by the date of the hiring act.

4. Eligibility: Applicants must meet the provisions of Article 2(1)(b) and (2) of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, as amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of August 28, and the regime established in Article 7 of the FCT Research Fellowship Regulation. BIPD fellowships may only be granted if the following cumulative conditions are met:

a) The PhD was obtained within the three years prior to the application submission date;

b) The postdoctoral research is conducted at a host institution different from the one where the PhD research was carried out;

c) The research activities do not require postdoctoral experience;

d) The research activities have a duration of three years or less;

e) The fellow does not exceed a cumulative period of three years in this type of fellowship, including possible renewals.

5. Work Plan: The candidate will be responsible for developing and characterizing a set of environmentally friendly nanostructured materials with magnetic properties and/or capacity to (bio)degrade end-of-life polymeric coatings (tasks 2.1 and 2.2 of the project) and studying the release profiles (task 2.3). He/she will also participate in tasks 4, 5, and 6, which include activities related to the applicability of the developed materials in detecting and/or degrading molecules, assessing environmental behavior, and evaluating the ecotoxicity of the developed materials, as well as disseminating and promoting scientific outreach. The candidate will: (1) Select active ingredients aligned with project goals and encapsulate/immobilize them in nanomaterials with controlled release capabilities and potential integration into sensing devices; (2) Synthesize nanoparticles using established methods, evaluating its applicability in immobilization, detection or monitoring; (3) Characterize nanomaterials morphologically, structurally, and compositionally, assess performance, and study release profiles (for materials with immobilized active ingredients), exploring their functional response in chemical or biological recognition or degradation contexts; (4) Participate in evaluating the environmental fate and behavior of nanomaterials in seawater and in preliminary toxicity assessments of new nanoadditives in marine species; (5) Analyze data and report findings in scientific manuscript format, participate in dissemination activities, and prepare one (1) final report.

6. Applicable Legislation and Regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute (Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of August 28); Regulation No. 950/2019 of November 29, published in Diário da República No. 241, 2nd Series, December 16 (FCT Research Fellowship Regulation); Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of August 16 (Legal regime for recognition of academic degrees and diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions).

7. Workplace: The work will be carried out mainly at CICECO/DEMaC, CICECO/DFIS, and occasionally at CESAM/DBio, University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Prof. João André da Costa Tedim, Prof. Carlos Alberto Ferreira Marques, and Dr. Roberto Carlos Domingues Martins, respectively.

8. Duration of the Fellowship: The fellowship will last for 8 months, starting in January 2026, non-renewable.

9. Monthly maintenance allowance: The fellowship amount is €1,851.00, as per the monthly maintenance allowance table in Annex I of Regulation No. 950/2019, subject to applicable updates under Article 18(2) of the same regulation. The fellow may also be reimbursed for Voluntary Social Insurance contributions, if enrolled.

10. Selection methods: The selection method will be 100% based on curriculum evaluation.

11. Selection committee composition: The jury will be composed by the President, Dr. Roberto Carlos Domingues Martins (Assistant Researcher, CESAM & Department of Biology, University of Aveiro), Full members Prof. João André da Costa Tedim (Associate Professor, CICECO & Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering, University of Aveiro) and Prof. Carlos Alberto Ferreira Marques (Assistant Professor, CICECO & Department of Physics, University of Aveiro) and the Alternate members, Dr. Maria Pavlaki (Assistant Researcher, CESAM & Department of Biology, University of Aveiro) and Dr. António Alexandre da Cunha Bastos (Assistant Researcher, CICECO & Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering, University of Aveiro)

12. Application period and submission method: The call is open from November 21 to December 5. Applications submitted outside this period will not be considered.

Applications must include a cover letter, a Curriculum Vitae (all publications must have a DOI for validation), a degree certificate, and other relevant documents that prove the required experience. Applicants must also provide an email address for official notifications.

Applications must be sent via email to roberto@ua.pt.

13. Publication/notification of results: Final results will be published as a ranked list by final score on the University’s website within 90 working days after the application deadline. The selected candidate will be notified by email. A 10-working-day period will be granted for prior hearing, as per the Administrative Procedure Code. If no response is received, the ranking list becomes final. Candidates may appeal within 15 working days or submit a complaint to the funding entity’s executive body within 30 working days after notification, as per Article 12 of the FCT Research Fellowship Regulation.

14. Validity of the call: The final ranking list will remain valid until October 2026 for the purpose of creating a reserve list.

Models of the fellowship contract and final report to be prepared by the fellow and supervisor are available at bolseiros - sgrh - Universidade de Aveiro (ua.pt).
