UiB shall be among Europe's leading universities, internationally recognized for high quality in research and education. As a societal institution, we shall contribute to sustainable and democratic development and be an attractive and inclusive place to study and work.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

At the Department of Earth Science, there is a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in paleoclimate reconstruction with speleothem fluid inclusion microthermometry. The position is for a fixed-term of 3 years and is funded by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

Speleothems are an important terrestrial climate archive, and new ways of using this archive for reconstructing climate are continuously being developed. In our lab we reconstruct past land temperatures based on the density of former drip water enclosed in microscopic fluid inclusions in speleothem calcite matrix. To this end, we measure the liquid-vapour homogenisation temperature of the fluid inclusions, a method also called microthermometry. More information about the method can be found in Krüger et al. (Chem. Geol., 289, 2011) and an example of an application in Løland et al. (Nature Communications, 2022).

In the framework of the ERC-funded project FluidMICS, we have over the last years been working on further developing and improving this method, testing its applicability to speleothems from various low latitude climate settings, and applying it for climate reconstructions through the late Quaternary and beyond. Our methodological focus has been on identifying and characterizing non-thermal factors or processes that potentially affect a) the initial water density when the inclusions are formed, b) the volume of the inclusions after they have formed, c) the surface tension mediated collapse of the vapour bubble and d) the timing of the transition from open pores to hermetically sealed fluid inclusions. To this end we have employed various small-scale imaging techniques in 2D and 3D, using facilities available in Bergen and collaborating with external project partners.

The Postdoc will initially join the FluidMICS project group and then continue some aspects of the work beyond the project period. The balance between methodological work and paleoclimate reconstructions can be discussed and depends on prior experience and preference. Our group is part of a broad network of international collaborators, and we have frequent visitors from all over the world. Once familiar with the microthermometry technique, the Postdoc is expected to take part in maintaining the laboratory and training students and visitors. In addition, (co-)supervision master students is envisaged.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) within Earth Sciences or a related discipline. PhD-students may apply if defence of the PhD-thesis is completed by 01.03.2026. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Prior expertise in speleothem research is a requirement.
  • Hands-on experience with the analysis and interpretation of speleothem petrography and/or fluid inclusions is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative and communication skills.
  • Excellent skills in both written and oral English is a requirement.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the application

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. 10 % of the working time can be devoted to teaching and outreach activities at the Department of Earth Science. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a progress plan.

It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

We can offer:

  • a good and professionally stimulating working environment.
  • enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • position as postdoctoral fellow (code 1352 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 657 000 upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
  • Good welfare benefits.

Your application must include:

  • a brief account of your research interests and motivation for applying for the position, including
    • A description of how and to what extent you have acquired the desired qualifications listed above
    • An assessment of how your expertise would benefit the research group
    • A brief outline of a potential project you would like to conduct
  • the names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor from the PhD programme.
  • CV
  • list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list).
  • transcripts and diplomas. If you have not yet completed your PhD degree, please submit a statement from your institution confirming the expected date of award of your degree.
  • relevant certificates/references.

The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at JobbNorge
