NOTICE OF OPENING OF AN INTERNATIONAL SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR THE RECRUITMENT OF A DOCTORATE EQUIVALENT TO AN ASSISTANT RESEARCHER POSITION

By order of 17/10/2025, the Dean of FEUP, Professor João Bernardo de Sena Esteves Falcão e Cunha, deliberated to open an international selection procedure for the recruitment of 1 Doctorate equivalent to an Assistant Researcher within the scope of Project CyChest - Gestão integrada do ciclo do castanheiro no Parque Natural de Montesinho (Integrated management of the chestnut tree cycle in Montesinho Natural Park) - PD23-00008 funded by the Promove Programme through Fundação “La Caixa”, in collaboration with the BPI and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT),for research scientific activities in the area of Chemical Engineering, in the form of a Uncertain Term Employment Contract, by legal imperative, under the terms of paragraph b) of no. 1 of article 6 of RJEC, ex vi of no. 2 of article 18 of RJEC, and will be maintained only for the period necessary to execute the tasks defined in the project and identified below, whose expected duration is nine months, never exceeding the maximum limit of six years.

This recruitment aims the performance of activities corresponding to the category of Doctorate equivalent to an Assistant Researcher, as stated in article 8 of Regulation No. 487/2020, of May 22.

The Doctorate equivalent to an Assistant Researcher, in abstract, is responsible for carrying out the activities foreseen in no. 2 of art. 7 of Regulation no. 487/2020, of May 22nd. Specifically, the Doctorate equivalent to an Assistant Researcher will develop R&D activities in the scope of Project CyChest - Gestão integrada do ciclo do castanheiro no Parque Natural de Montesinho, which inserts in the area of Chemical Engineering, contributing to the following project activity, foreseen in the application:

1. Extraction of high value-added compounds from chestnut by-products;

2. Product development – cosmetics and food;

3. Process integration.

The selected researcher may also provide possible collaboration in teaching and training activities in the area of research.

  1. The scientific areas of this selection procedure are Chemical Engineering.
  2. Applicable Legislation: Decree-Law no. 57/2016, of 29 August, approving a regime for contracting doctorates to stimulate scientific and technological employment in all areas of knowledge (RJEC), in the wording introduced by the first amendment provided Law no. 57/2017, of July 19, Regulatory Decree no. 11-A/2017, of December 29, Labor Code, Law on 7/2009, of 12 February, in its current version and Regulation nº 487/2020, of 22 May - Regulation of Research, Science and Technology Staff of the University of Porto in its current wording.
  3. In the wording of article 16 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 29 August, this procedure is exempted from the authorization of the members of the Government responsible for the areas of Finance and Public Administration, namely in paragraph no.3 of article 7 of the LTFP; from the prior favorable opinion of the members of the Government responsible for the areas of Finance and Public Administration as mentioned in no. 5 of article 30 of the LTFP and from the procedure for the recruitment of workers in the requalification situation referred to in Article 265 of the LTFP.
  4. In accordance with articles 22.º, n.º 3 and 4 of the Regulation and 13.º of the RJEC, the Recruitment board is composed as follows:

  5. The work will be developed at the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).
  6. The monthly salary to be awarded is specified in level 9, 1st position of the rank of Assistant Investigator working on an exclusive basis, of the table annexed to the Regulations 487/2020. Such salary corresponds to a gross monthly remuneration of 3.501,28 Euros..
  7. General Admission Requirements:

    Any national, foreign, or stateless person holding a doctorate in Chemical Engineering or in a related area, with a scientific and professional curriculum vitae that reveals a profile appropriate to the activity to be developed, may apply to this competition.

    Any doctorate awarded by a foreign higher education institution must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution in accordance with article 25 of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, awarded by foreign higher education institutions and paragraph e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of August 3, and any formalities established therein must be complied with by the date of the hiring act.

  8. Specific Admission requirements:

The following specific criteria must be fulfilled to determine the appropriate profile for the activity to be developed: candidates must have relevant scientific and professional curriculum and demonstrate skills and previous experience in the development of natural products through extraction processes and stabilization methods, proven by at least twenty scientific articles published in international journals and proven experience of at least four years in the industry in the development of consumer products.

9. Recruitment method:

In accordance with articles 26 of the Regulation and 5 of the RJEC, the recruitment method is:

  1. Evaluation of the curricular path and scientific career of the applicants (APCC) (90%);

b) Interview (ENT) - (10%)

10. Evaluation of the curricular path and scientific career (APCC) (90%)

10.1. Evaluation of the curricular path and scientific career, considering a profile that is suited to the requirements of the duties corresponding to the category covered by this tender, and focusing on the relevance, quality, and currentness of the following aspects:

a) Scientific performance in the areas and subareas for which the tender is open.

b) Knowledge transfer and enhancement.

c) Science and technology management and communication.

10.2 In evaluating the aspects indicated in points a), b) and c) of the preceding paragraph, the activity developed in the last 5 (five) years must be considered.

10. 3 The five-year period mentioned in 12.2 may be extended by the Board, at any applicant’s request, when based on the suspension of scientific activity for socially protected reasons, namely for reasons of parental leave, prolonged serious illness, and other situations of unavailability for work that are legally protected.

10.4 In the evaluation of the dimensions of the aspects described in 10.1, the following parameters are considered, and the following weighting factors are attributed:

A1) Criteria for evaluation of the Scientific Performance (SP) (90%):

SP1 ‐ Scientific Production. Quality and quantity of the scientific production in the area and specific domain for which the recruitment process is open (books, articles in journals, articles in conference proceedings, communications in conferences), expressed by the number and type of publications and the recognition provided by the scientific community (translated in the quality of the places of publication and in the references made to them by other authors).

SP2 – Coordination and participation in scientific projects. Quality and quantity of scientific projects in which he/she participated in the area and specific domain for which the recruitment process is open, financed on a competitive basis by public funds, through national or international agencies or by companies, and the results obtained in them, being given relevance to projects coordination, and participation in international projects. In assessing the quality, consideration must be given to the contribution to the project (coordination or participation), to the amount of funding obtained, to the degree of requirement of the funding competition, to the evaluations of the projects carried out and the prototypes completed, in particular if followed in products or services.

SP3 ‐ Intervention in the scientific and professional communities. Ability to intervene in the scientific and professional communities, expressed, in particular, through collaboration in the editing of journals, presentation of invited lectures, participation in academic juries outside the institution itself, as well as activities with recognized impact, namely prizes or other distinctions, in the specific area and domain for which the recruitment process is open.

SP4 Advanced training. Advanced training activity, duly framed within the maximum limits defined by legislation; supervision/co-supervision of PhD and MSc, and training actions in higher education institutions in the indicated recruitment area.

A2) Criteria for Knowledge Transfer and Valorization (KT) (5%):

KT1‐ Patents, registration and ownership of rights, preparation of technical standards and legislation. Authorship and co‐authorship of patents, registrations of ownership of intellectual property rights on chemical products. Participation in the elaboration of legislative projects and technical standards.

KT2 – Projects with companies and institutions and consulting services. Coordination and participation in projects with and in companies and institutions that aim to improve the set of products and services; Coordination and participation in consultancy activities involving the business environment and the public sector; Provision of specialized services, whose scope is the resolution of problems that require advanced knowledge, requested by external entities. The evaluation of this criterion must also take into account the economic value of the research results achieved, measured by the development and technology transfer contracts to which they gave rise and the spin‐off companies to whose creation they have contributed, in the specific area and domain that the recruitment process is open for.

KT3 – Dissemination of science and technology. Coordination and participation in scientific and technological dissemination initiatives within the scientific community (for example, organization of congresses and conferences) and for different audiences. Publications for scientific and technological dissemination in the specific area and domain for which the recruitment process is open.

A3) Criteria for Science and Technology Management and Communication (STMC) (5%):

Science and technology management and communication activities, in the area for which the recruitment process is open: (a) participation in management bodies or performance of functions relevant to the mission of the University of Porto, especially in the research unit where it fits the call; (b) active contribution to the definition and fulfillment of scientific policies, particularly open science; (c) collaboration in evaluation committees of activities of a technical and scientific nature, promoted by national or international entities, namely within the scope of calls for projects, grants or awards.

10.5 The APCC final classification is obtained by the following formula: APCC= (0.90*DC) + (0.05*TC) + (0.05*GCCT)

11. Evaluation of the Interview (ENT) (10%):

The interview will be held for the five best-ranked applicants in the evaluation of their curricular path and scientific career will be admitted, and the board will evaluate aspects related to the research conducted by the applicants.

12. Final classification:

The Final Classification (CF) of the Evaluation of the applicants’ Curricular Path and Scientific Career (APCC) and interview (ENT) or presentation or a public demonstration session, will be obtained by applying the following formula: CF = (APCC*0.9) + (ENT*0.1).

Only applicants with a score equal to or higher than seventy points, by all members of the Jury, will be selected.

13. Valuation of the recruitment method:

131. Each member of the Board evaluates the applicants’ curricular path and scientific career on a scale from 0 to 100 points, with a weighting up to the hundredths, and the classification is obtained through the weighting defined in the criteria to be evaluated.

13.2. The interview evaluation is expressed on a scale of 0 to 100 points, with a weighting to the hundredths.

14. Evaluation methodology:

14.1. After the admission of the applicants, and before starting the voting for their final ranking in the evaluation of their scientific and curricular background, each member of the Board presents a written document, to be attached to the meeting minutes, with the list of the applicants in descending order of merit, duly substantiated, considering the criteria and parameters of this competition notice.

14.2. The Board deliberates employing reasoned roll-call voting following the selection criteria adopted and disclosed. Abstentions are not allowed.

14.3. The seriation methodology is that which is indicated in article 29 of the Regulation.

14.4. If an absolute majority of votes is not reached after the voting explained in the previous number, or in case of a tie, the Chair's vote will be used for the final ranking.

14.5. Each member of the Board must respect, in the various voting rounds, the order he or she presented in the document referred to in paragraph 14.1.

14.6. The interview or presentation or a public demonstration session, has a maximum duration of one hour and is exclusively aimed at clarifying aspects related to the research carried out by the applicants.

14.7. The Board’s discussions will be briefed in minutes taken during its meetings, containing a summary of what occurred, as well as the votes cast by each member and respective reasoning.

14.8. After concluding the application of the selection criteria, the jury proceeds to produce an ordered list of the approved applicants with the respective classification.

14.9. The Board's final decision is approved by the head of the institution responsible for opening the tender notice. The final decision on hiring is the responsibility of the top manager of the hiring entity.

15. Formalization of applications:

15.1. Applications must be formalized at http://www.fe.up.pt/concursos , reference on-line nº 1389, until de 23h59m (local time) of 21/11/2025.

The application must include: full name, number and date of identity card or citizen card, or civil identification number, tax identification number, date of birth, residence, and contact address, including e-mail and telephone contact.

15.2 The application must be accompanied by documentary evidence of the conditions described in points 7 and 8 of this notice, namely:

  1. a) Copy of doctorate certificate or diploma.
  2. b) Detailed curriculum vitae, containing all information relevant for the evaluation of the application, as well as for demonstrating compliance with the criteria set out in points 7 and 8 of this announcement, organized in accordance with the seriation criteria set out in no. 10.4.
  3. c) Letter of motivation.
  4. d) Copies of up to 10 publications considered most relevant by the candidate, associated with the position;
  5. e) Document on the processing of personal data (Annex I)
  6. f) Other supporting documents considered relevant to the eligibility of the application and documents that the applicant considers relevant to the assessment of his/her merit.

15.3. Failure to submit the documents mentioned in 15.2 will lead to the exclusion of the application. For purposes of hearing of the interested parties, the exclusion decision is notified to the applicants by e-mail.

15.4. The Board may, whenever it deems necessary, ask the applicants to provide complementary documents for the facts described in the submitted curriculum, setting a deadline for that purpose.

16. False statements made by applicants will be punished according to the law.

17. Notices of the results:

The minute(s) of the Board meeting(s) for evaluating the applications will be sent via e-mail with a delivery receipt.

18. Parties hearing and deadline for final decision:

In accordance with article 121 of the Administrative Procedure Code, after being notified, the applicants have 10 working days to comment. Within 90 days, counting from the deadline for submitting applications, the Board's final decisions are made.

19. Reserve list:

In case of withdrawal of the first ranked applicant, the highest management body of the Faculty reserves the right to call the next applicant and so on successively until the vacancy is filled, upon the judgment of convenience and opportunity, based on the selection reserve list that can be used up to 12 months from the date of this notice, and for this purpose a "selection reserve list" is constituted that corresponds to the final ranking list.

20. The present competition is exclusively aimed at filling the indicated vacancy and may be terminated until the final ranking list of applicants is ratified, expiring with the respective occupation of the job position on offer. If none of the applicants has the appropriate profile for the performance of the functions described above within this project's scope, the Board reserves the right not to award the position in the competition.

21. Annex I

Processing of personal data - Information for applicants

1. What data is collected and processed

Within the scope of reporting on the implementation of the project in which this selection procedure is included (CyChest), the data of the selected candidates may also be shared with the organisations funding the project (FCT and La Caixa Foundation), to the extent strictly necessary.

6. Access to personal data

Access to personal data within the scope of this selection procedure is limited to those taking part in the recruitment and selection process.

In compliance with the principle of open administration and the principle of transparency, the documentation produced within the scope of the procedure in question is considered administrative documentation, and can be consulted by those interested in it, as provided for in the Code of Administrative Procedure, approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 07 January, in its current wording, and the provisions of Law no. 26/2016, of 22 August, which approved the regime of access to administrative and environmental information and the reuse of administrative documents, are applicable in terms of access to data.

7. Rights of the data subject

The data subject may exercise their rights in relation to the processing of their personal data, as provided for in the Data Protection Legislation, namely the right of access, rectification, erasure, portability, limitation of processing and opposition, by sending an e-mail to dpo@reit.up.pt.

The data subject may also lodge a complaint with the National Data Protection Authority - Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados, at www.cnpd.pt.

8. Storage of your personal data

Data will be stored and kept for the time strictly necessary to fulfil the purposes identified above and in accordance with the law.

Documents submitted by unsuccessful candidates will be destroyed if they are not returned within one year of the end of the selection procedure.
