The Nemesis team (Neighborhood Environments and Mobility: Effects on Social health InequalitieS) at Inserm Unit U1136 (Pierre Louis Institute of Epidemiology and Public Health) is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the project:

“Hwaves-Neuro : Heat waves risks for neurodegenerative patients in different microclimatic areas. Short-term impact of heat waves on the risk of hospital admission, emergency department visits and death for Alzheimer, Parkinson, Lewy Body disease and related dementia.”

Based on the analysis of data from the French National Health Data System (SNDS), the project aims to: (1) examine the association between various meteorological heat-wave indicators, with different time lags, and the risk of emergency department visits, hospitalization, and death for Alzheimer, Parkinson, Lewy Body disease and related dementia; (2) assess the moderating effect of air pollutants on the association between heat and health risk; (3) evaluate the moderating effect of microclimatic factors related to urban heat vulnerability on the association between meteorological indicators and health risk.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who will contribute to the development of research methodologies, experimentation, data processing and analysis, and the dissemination of results. Specifically, the post-doc will examine how exposure to meteorological factors and air pollution is associated with the risk of emergency department visits, hospitalization, and death.

The recruited postdoctoral researcher will be integrated into a multidisciplinary team and will contribute to various stages of the project. The main responsibilities include:

Study Coordination and Data Management

  • • Contribute to the overall development of the study.
  • • Ensure, in collaboration with the study lead, the progress of environmental and climatic data collection, and assist in resolving any issues that arise.
  • • Work with the data collection coordinator to ensure the quality and compliance of the collected data.
  • • Assist in organizing and optimizing the data processing
  • • Develop and maintain documentation for databases and variables generated throughout the research process.

Analyze SNDS and environmental data:

  • • Engage in the processing of health data from the French National Health Data System - SNDS, urban environmental data (NDVI, land use, demographics, etc.), and climatic data (MétéoFrance data);
  • • Contribute to the development of data analysis procedures;
  • • Analyse environmental and climatic data in relation to health data.

Scientific Communication and Dissemination

  • • Prepare and publish first-author scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • • Present research findings at national and international conferences.
  • • Contribute to the dissemination of results to both the scientific community and the general public.

  • Skills/Qualifications:
    • • Applied knowledge of environmental epidemiology
    • • Expertise in Geographic Information Science (GIS), including proficiency with ArcGIS Pro
    • • General knowledge of urban geography
    • • Strong interest in the interactions between climate change and human health in urban environments
    • • Proficiency in statistical and computational techniques for data collection and processing
    • • Applied knowledge of R or Python programming languages
    • • In-depth knowledge of data production methods and tools
    • • General knowledge of database management systems
    • • Strong understanding of the legal and ethical framework governing research
    • • Applied knowledge in long-term archiving of research data
    • • Proficiency in written and oral presentation techniques
    • • French language proficiency: B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – CEFR)
    • • English language proficiency: B2 (CEFR)

  • Specific Requirements:
    • • Ability to work with databases: data manipulation, extraction of relevant variables, and merging of datasets
    • • Ability to locate, catalog, analyse, and critically assess data, including evaluating the relevance and reliability of data sources
    • • Familiarity with data documentation standards
    • • Ability to write scientific documents and articles, including in English
    • • Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and a strong analytical mindset
    • • Strong critical thinking skills and responsiveness
    • • Capacity for conceptualization and abstraction
    • • High degree of autonomy and strong organizational skills
