The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) hosts the PHYNEST project, a prestigious new MSCA-COFUND doctoral programme coordinated by the UAB. The programme recruits and trains 25 doctoral candidates focusing on advanced materials, innovative methodologies, and transformative solutions that address pressing challenges in energy transition and environmental sustainability. Research groups involved include IONHE (2021 SGR 00607) and SGR 00649, covering topics in ionizing radiation, health, environment, and particle physics.

Job Description
• Position: PhD Candidate in Modelling Tumour Dynamics and Radiotherapy Response  
• Department: Physics  
• Supervisors: Immaculada Martínez-Rovira and Pere Masjuan  
• Enrolment: Physics doctoral programme of the PHYNEST project  
• Contract: Full-time, 4-year contract (37.5 hours per week), starting at the end of 2026  
• Gross annual salary: €30,900  
• Tuition fees: Fully covered by the project

Research Project
• Advance a renormalisation-group (RG) field-theoretical framework to model universal features of tumor growth arrest.  
• Extend the model to simulate and predict solid tumor response to innovative radiotherapy modalities such as spatially fractionated radiotherapy (SFRT) and FLASH therapy.  
• Explore how radiotherapy alters critical exponents, scaling behavior, and fixed-point structures within the model.  
• Use computational modelling and simulations to validate theoretical predictions and identify universal biomarkers of therapeutic efficacy.  
• Interdisciplinary research integrating theoretical physics, computational modelling, biology, and medicine.

Qualifications
• Degree in Physics and a Master's in Applications of Physics to Medicine or closely related field.  
• Strong programming skills (e.g., Python or similar languages).  
• Previous experience in modelling biological systems is highly desirable.  
• Doctoral candidates only (must not already possess a PhD).  
• Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively.  
• High proficiency in English, both written and spoken.  
• Genuine interest in multidisciplinary research at the intersection of physics, biology, and medicine.  
• Mobility rule: Must not have resided or carried out main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the 36 months preceding the call deadline (Feb 28, 2026).
