The Department of Physics is one of the biggest departments within the Faculty of Science and supports a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. It has about 250 employees of which 95 are PhD students. Many have been internationally recruited. The Department is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which apart from the Department of Physics houses the Department of Astronomy, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).
More information about us, please visit: www.su.se/department-of-physics/.
Members of the department are also part of the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics (OKC), a rich scientific environment that comprises more than a hundred researchers working in both theory and experiment.
The Department of Physics and Stockholm University is affiliated to Stockholm Dual Career Network (SDCN) that supports expat partners with professional events, career-related advice and by building a social network in their new hometown. www.sdcn.se.
Project description
The project will be carried out within the astroparticle and elementary particle physics division at Stockholm University, which currently consists of six faculty members, four researchers and postdocs and seven PhD students. The focus will be on analysis of the high energy proton-proton collisions collected with the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, complemented with responsibilities in operations and upgrade. The Stockholm ATLAS group has been active in the construction and commissioning and calibration of the Tile Calorimeter and the First Level Trigger system, and currently carries responsibilities within the Phase-II upgrade of the Tile Calorimeter readout electronics. The group is also involved in several combined performance groups, e.g. the flavour tagging and inner tracking groups, as well as in the trigger, data quality and luminosity areas. Our main research topics are SM and BSM Higgs pair production, and searches for supersymmetry and dark matter.
Main responsibilities
The applicants to this position are expected to
- • take a leading role in our ATLAS data analysis efforts in the areas Higgs pair production or BSM searches related to third generation particles
- • contribute to the activities in combined performance, trigger or data preparation
- • contribute to the Phase-II Tile Calorimeter upgrade activities
- • assist when necessary in the supervision of master students and PhD students
- • initially be based at the Department of Physics in Stockholm, but substantial presence at CERN will be possible.
Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.
Assessment criteria
It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
We seek up to two self-motivated candidates who wish to take a leading role in our research programme. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Previous experience within ATLAS, data analysis and programming skills, expertise in experimental analysis techniques relevant to the project, as well as experience with flavour tagging or tracking is considered as an advantage but is not required.
About the employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Access during the first half of 2026 or as per agreement.
