UiB - Knowledge that shapes society

UiB shall be among Europe's leading universities, internationally recognized for high quality in research and education. As a societal institution, we shall contribute to sustainable and democratic development and be an attractive and inclusive place to study and work.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

At the Department of Biological Sciences, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within molecular parasitology and fish immunology. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years, is financed by UiB, and will be associated with the NFR-financed research project naNoLice, which is a collaborative project between UiB and SINTEF.

About the project/work tasks:

Salmon lice are currently the main challenge within the salmon farming industry, with negative impact on both wild and farmed salmonids. At the Sea Lice Research Centre, we have for many years characterized a range of proteins that appear to play an important role in the salmon–salmon louse interaction. The main goal of the current project is to investigate whether these proteins can be used in a DNA or RNA-based vaccine against salmon louse. The project will also test nanoparticles for their ability to improve transfection efficiency, vaccine stability, and mucosal antibody responses following vaccination. Thus, the project also has the potential to increase general knowledge about the use of nanoparticles in nucleic acid-based vaccines against mucosal pathogens.

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the Sea Lice Research Centre group, which includes many researchers with extensive and broad experience in sea lice biology. Therefore, the post doctor also has the opportunity to participate in other research activities related to sea lice.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) within fish health, molecular biology, cell biology or biology, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • • Experience from molecular biology laboratory work is a requirement.
  • • Experience with cell cultivation, nanotechnology, immunology, vaccine development, fish and/or salmon louse is an advantage.
  • • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • • Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. If the appointee lacks teaching experience, or other relevant qualifications, the employment period may be increased to 3 years and 3 months. Teaching and other duties will in such cases be added to the position. The department will fund the extra months. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a progress plan. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

We can offer:

  • • A good and professionally stimulating working environment
  • • Position as postdoctoral fellow (code 1352 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 657 000 upon appointment.
