Assignments

A doctoral student shall devote their time to third-cycle studies in accordance with the general syllabus for the subject in which they are admitted. The final goal of the programme is the doctoral degree. The doctoral student conducts research and is expected to contribute to the development of knowledge within the field. This includes developing their own ideas and communicating scientific results both orally and in writing. The doctoral student must develop the knowledge and skills required to independently conduct research within the subject through the production of a doctoral thesis. The position also aims to ensure that the doctoral student develops the ability to apply the scientific skills and knowledge acquired in further research or other qualified professional work.

The doctoral student is expected to carry out their work in Gothenburg and to participate regularly and consistently in the department’s on-site activities. This includes active participation in subject-specific and other research seminars. The working language of the department is Swedish, and the University offers introductory courses in Swedish when needed.

The doctoral programme comprises four years of full-time study and leads to a doctoral degree. As part of your doctoral employment, you may undertake departmental duties amounting to a maximum of 20% of full-time over the duration of your studies, which will result in a corresponding extension of the study period. Departmental duties usually include teaching at the undergraduate and Master’s levels, but may also involve research and administrative tasks.

Eligibility

Admission to third-cycle (doctoral) studies requires both general and specific eligibility as defined in the general syllabus for the doctoral subject. General eligibility for third-cycle studies is held by anyone who:

  1. • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  2. • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
  3. • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

To be admitted to the doctoral programme, the applicant must also, by the application deadline, meet the requirements for specific eligibility as established in the general syllabus for the subject in question, which can be found here.

Assessment Criteria

Selection among applicants who meet the general and specific eligibility requirements is based on their ability to benefit from the doctoral programme. For the selection process, the applicant is required to submit:

  2. • A project proposal of no more than 2,500 words, in which the applicant specifies a research area that they would like to develop, justifies its relevance and discusses which theories, methods and materials may be used. The project outline is assessed on the basis of the following criteria: a) ability to formulate research questions/scientific problems, b) independence and originality, c) familiarity with previous and current research in the area, d) whether the formulated problems are linked to current research and whether they are relevant in relation to the opportunities presented by the material, e) whether the described methods for collection and analysis of data are adequate, and f) if the project is deemed feasible within the given time frames.

The applicant’s academic results and qualifications, documented in a CV, degree certificates, and transcripts of records, are also taken into account in the assessment.

Admission and selection are carried out with consideration of the department’s available supervisory resources within the doctoral student’s research area. In addition to reviewing the submitted qualifications, the selection process may also include interviews and reference checks. The decision on admission is made by the Head of Department following preparation within the department.
