Rector
of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences
announces an open competition for the position of assistant professor (POST DOC type) (K/M/N)
in the group of research staff, within the project entitled
“Geoarchaeology of agriculture — uncovering prehistoric anthropogenic environmental transformations in the loess zone in Silesia”
at the Institute of Soil Science, Plant Nutrition and Environmental Protection
Job Description:
The person employed in the post-doc position will participate in scientific research aimed at identifying the impact of prehistoric human activity on environmental transformations in the Silesian loess zone.
In particular, the post-doc will be responsible for characterizing the dynamics of prehistoric settlement in the study area based on a critical analysis of the documentation of the National Register of Archaeological Monuments (KEZA).
The tasks specified in the project from which the position is funded include, among others:
- • analysis of KEZA data for selected micro-regions of the Silesian loess zone and preparation, on this basis, of a series of maps showing the settlement ranges of particular cultural units between the Neolithic period and the Early Middle Ages;
- • participation in fieldwork — drilling, soil profile excavations and sampling;
- • cooperation with the project leader and other team members in the implementation of research tasks, and providing expert knowledge on prehistoric settlement in the loess zone of south-western Poland;
- • dissemination of project results through scientific publications and presentations at national and international conferences;
- • other tasks assigned by the head of the unit resulting from the profile and nature of the unit and the university.
Requirements for the candidate:
- • at least a doctoral degree (PhD) in the humanities in archaeology or a related discipline;
- • command of Polish (spoken and written);
- • command of English at a minimum B2 level;
- • experience working with KEZA data and knowledge of the specific nature of these data (especially data from the AZP programme);
- • advanced proficiency in GIS software;
- • preferably experience in field archaeological research in loess areas, including palaeoenvironmental or geoarchaeological studies;
- • good knowledge of the prehistory of south-western Poland;
- • documented publication and scientific record;
- • good work organization, ability to solve research problems, communication skills and ability to work in a team.
Mandatory project eligibility criteria:
- • the doctoral degree obtained in the year of employment in the project or within 12 years before 1 January of the year of employment in the project (in the case of multiple doctoral degrees, the reference date is the date of the first degree; the indicated period may be extended by documented career breaks, i.e. periods of long-term [over 90 days] certified sick leave or rehabilitation benefits due to incapacity for work; additionally, the period may be extended by months spent on childcare-related leave granted under the Labour Code, and for women applying to the call — by 18 months for each child born or adopted if this method is more advantageous);
- • the doctoral degree obtained at an institution other than the project host institution (UPWr), or completion of at least a 10-month continuous and documented postdoctoral fellowship at an institution other than the project host (UPWr) and in a country different from that in which the doctoral degree was awarded;
- • readiness to be employed for a period not shorter than 6 months;
- • during the period of receiving remuneration at UPWr under this NCN project, not receiving other remuneration from funds granted as direct costs of research projects financed within NCN calls;
- • during the period of receiving remuneration at UPWr under this NCN project, not being employed under an employment contract with another employer, including an employer based outside Poland;
- • during the period of receiving remuneration at UPWr under this NCN project, not receiving retirement pension benefits from the social security system.
• The above project criteria are specified in the SONATA-20 call documentation available at the NCN website (pp. 42–43).
The candidate must also meet the criteria indicated in Article 113 of the Act of 20 July 2018 — Law on Higher Education and Science:

- • has not been subject to the disciplinary penalty of dismissal from employment at a university with a ban on employment at universities for a period of 6 months to 5 years, or deprivation of the right to practice as an academic teacher for a period of 10 years.
We offer:
- • full-time employment;
- • the post-doc salary may amount to a maximum of PLN 140,000 per year (total employer’s gross cost), including all salary components, such as the additional annual payment and/or other components provided under UPWr regulations;
- • planned employment period: 6 months (May 2026 – November 2026), with the possibility of extension up to a total of 12 months;
- • a scientifically attractive working environment;
- • work in a team with good experimental facilities and engaged in interesting and modern research topics, enabling the development and enhancement of professional competences and international collaboration.
