The Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies (CHMS) offers a three-year postdoctoral position related to the topic of antisemitism in contemporary Norway. We are seeking a researcher who can contribute to one of the center's strategic focus areas. Applications for doctoral fellowships may also be considered.
Antisemitism has been increasing over the last two years, and there is a need for new and broader knowledge. How should we interpret this increase? Are we witnessing a revitalization of earlier anti-Jewish attitudes, or have new prejudice complexes emerged? And what does it mean to have a Jewish identity in contemporary Norway?
Historically, antisemitism has increased when anti-Jewish attitudes are politically exploited, and the concept of antisemitism is also politicized in various ways today. This has led to the research field being characterized by tensions related to perspectives, definitions, and methods for measuring prevalence. The CHMS seeks a researcher who, in addition to conducting empirical research, is interested in further developing theoretical perspectives in this field of research.
Antisemitism is a complex phenomenon and can be studied from different perspectives and with emphasis on various manifestations - such as attitudes, actions, cultural expressions, internet memes, or everyday experiences. The CHMS has several ongoing projects that encompass many of these dimensions. The person appointed to this position will be affiliated with the research group working on antisemitism at the CHMS and may participate in ongoing research projects at the center (for information about these, see hlsenteret.no). Good knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is required.
