As per the terms laid down in the Statute of the Research Fellow, approved by Law no. 40/2004, 18 August, as it stands, we announce the launching of a call for awarding a post-doctoral research fellowship (RF), in the framework of road safety modelling in interurban roads and urban and periurban mobility.

3 – Type of Scholarship

Postdoctoral research grant (BIPD), as described in Article 8 of LNEC Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships

4 – Financing source

LNEC own revenue

5 – Scientific area

Transportation

6 - Duration

The Grant shall be awarded for a 12-month period, renewable up to the maximum of three years.

7 – Activity Regime

All the work shall be developed on an exclusive dedication regime, as per the provisions laid down in the Statute of the Research Fellow, approved by Law no. 40/2004, 18 August, as it stands, and in the LNEC Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships, which can be consulted on FCT and LNEC websites.

8 - Work plan and objectives

The scholarship holder must contribute to the tasks assigned to the Planning, Traffic and Safety Unit, in line with its main R&D objectives, namely: in research and technological development studies, particularly in the analysis of accidents on interurban roads, in the study of the relationship between the characteristics of the roadside area and accident rates, in the development of new methods to support sustainable mobility and logistics, in the installation of sensors in vehicles and exploitation of the data collected, as well as other projects within the scope of the Planning, Traffic and Safety Unit.

The following skills are preferred:

• Experience in studies of behaviour related to road traffic and transport, including observation of road user interaction and analysis of accident scenarios.

• Transport safety and road design: relationships between infrastructure characteristics and the occurrence or severity of accidents, through mathematical modelling.

• Knowledge of image processing, in particular its application in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and its interaction with the road infrastructure.

• Experience in big data analysis and handling of large data sets, with skills in applying AI and machine learning techniques to traffic pattern analysis and road infrastructure design.

• Knowledge in urban and periurban mobility, focused on multimodal integration, as well as active and sustainable mobility.

• Support the design of citizen-oriented mobility solutions, through digital participation platforms, algorithms for identifying safe and sustainable routes, multimodal mobility hubs, as well as interactive simulation and visualisation tools for designing urban solutions.

• Contribute to the development of circular logistics models and smart governance mechanisms that promote accessibility, safety, inclusion, resilience, and sustainability in urban and periurban areas.

• Experience in the use of GIS.

9 - Location

Workplace: LNEC – National Laboratory for Civil Engineering, I.P.

Avenida do Brasil, 101 – 1700-066 Lisboa, Portugal

The activities shall be conducted at the Planning, Traffic and Safety Unit of the Transportation Department at LNEC.

10 - Qualifications

Eligible candidates are PhD holders in Civil Engineering, Transport Engineering, Computer Science and Human Factors, whose degree has been obtained in the last three years, and who show motivation for carrying out research tasks, in the fields mentioned in 8, as well as participating in joint research projects involving the in situ observation of relevant parameters of the road traffic system.

Due to the nature of the tasks to be accomplished, the candidates must be fluent in written and spoken Portuguese and English languages.

11 – Scientific supervision

The activities will be supervised by the principal researcher João Cardoso from the Planning, Traffic and Safety Unit of the Transportation Department at LNEC.
