A competition is open for the award of a Postdoctoral Fellowship (BPD) under Project reference 2024.16290. PEX entitled “Unraveling the composition of neutron stars: a flexible tool for the equation of state,” a project funded by national funds through the budget of the Foundation for Science and Technology I.P. (FCT).

The ADDF – Association for the Development of the Department of Physics, a private non-profit institution belonging to SICTN, is opening a competition for the recruitment of a Postdoctoral Fellowship (BPD) for 12 months, on an exclusive, non-renewable basis, with a flexible start date, to run between April 15, 2026, and August 1, 2026, at the latest. The contract will be governed by the provisions of Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, amended by Decree-Law No. 202/2012, of August 27, by Decree-Law No. 233/2012, of October 29, Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, Decree-Law No. 89/2013, of July 9, and Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28 (Research Grant Holder Statute); FCT, IP Research Grant Regulations, published on December 16, 2019, pursuant to paragraphs 1 and 2 of Article 7 of the Research Grant Holder Statute (EB1), the full text of which is available at

Skills/Qualifications

The fellowship holder will conduct research within the scope of the R&D project “Unraveling the composition of neutron stars: a flexible tool for the equation of states.”

The discovery of gravitational waves (GW) from the collision of two neutron stars GW170817, followed by a gamma-ray burst and a glowing kilonova, marked the dawn of a new era in astrophysics. This groundbreaking event revealed that by combining observations from GW detectors and telescopes, we could unlock the secrets of one of the densest objects in the Universe: neutron stars (NS).

In this project, we want to develop a NS model based on a relativistic description of baryonic matter. Using computational Bayesian techniques, a flexible model based on microphysical principles, that covers a wide range of densities, proton fractions, and temperatures, bridging the gap between astrophysical observations, ab-initio calculations, and experimental data, will be developed. In a second step, we will generate versatile, realistic and open-source equations of state at zero and finite temperatures. The identification of possible signatures of new degrees of freedom is also of interest.

Workplace: The work will be carried out at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra.

Scientific supervison: ****Prof. Helena Pais, Assistant Professor at FCTUC and PI of the project.
