This post-doc position at the CIMAP laboratory, Caen, France is part of the ANR (French National Research Agency) FLAMIR project - Chalcogenide glass Fiber Laser for Mid-Infrared (2023-2027), which aims to develop chalcogenide glass-based fiber lasers in the mid-infrared (MIR), representing an innovative and promising solution to meet the needs of various photonic applications. The FLAMIR project is a consortium of renowned French laboratories and institutes: Institute of Chemical Sciences of Rennes (ISCR), Université de Caen-Normandie (CIMAP Laboratory), CEA Saclay (LCFO Laboratory), Université du Littoral Côte d'Opale (LPCA Laboratory).

This post-doctoral position focuses on research into the development of innovative mid-infrared (MIR) laser sources, which is an ambitious topic in current photonics. Such sources have many potential applications, such as remote sensing of greenhouse gases ( CO2 ,methane...). Other important applications can be found in medicine, since many important biomolecules, such as proteins, lipids, and amides, contain strong characteristic vibrational transitions in the MIR. Consequently, these laser sources can be used for tissue imaging, reconstruction, excision, or even tissue ablation. However, these applications remain challenging because they require compact, robust, and affordable laser sources with high efficiency and output power, as well as good output beam quality.

This post-doc position work will go beyond the scope of the ANR FLAMIR project by studying various low-phonon-energy infrared materials doped with active rare earth ions, such as glasses, crystals, and ceramics, for the development of new-generation MIR laser sources.

This post-doctoral position will involve studies in the fields of materials science, optical spectroscopy of rare earth ions in solid-state dielectric media, and laser development.

This work will be carried out within the OML (Optics, Materials, and Lasers) team at the CIMAP laboratory, which is renowned for its expertise in fluoride crystal growth, laser material characterization, and laser source development. The OML team is composed of approximately 25 permanent researchers, post-docs, doctoral students, and research engineers. The team is highly active in publishing (https://hal.science/OML-CIMAP) and has long-standing links with French companies working in the field of laser sources.

Skills/Qualifications

Required skills :

  • - Expertise in materials science . Candidates with a PhD background in optics, spectroscopy, and/or solid-state or fiber lasers are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • - Strong research experience (simulation and design/ implementation of experiments in optical spectroscopy and laser development, presentations in international conferences, publications writing ).
  • - Strong communication skills and ability to report and present data.
  • - Excellent collaboration skills and ability to take initiative.
