Competition for a POST-DOC position in a research project

at the Department and Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology

The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Medical University of Lublin announces a competition for a POST-DOC position in a group of full-time research staff at the Department and Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology to carry out research tasks of the National Science Centre's SONATA 19 project entitled: "A new generation of scaffolds based on curdlan and whey protein isolate obtained by electrospinning for the treatment of cartilage, bone, and cartilage-bone defects."

Project Goal:The aim of this project is to develop a new generation of biomaterials based on two natural and non-toxic polymers, curdlan and whey protein isolate (WPI), using electrospinning. The biomaterials will have a new composition and structure, demonstrate mechanical stability, undergo controlled biodegradation, and support cellular response and tissue regeneration. As part of the project, the newly designed biomaterials will be assessed for their structural, physicochemical, mechanical, and biological properties. For the latter, a series of tests are planned analyses, including in vitro cell culture experiments, ex vivo studies using tissue explants, in vivo studies using the zebrafish model, ex ovo studies using the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane model (CAM), and in vivo studies in rats. Therefore, this project will enable a comprehensive characterization of the developed biomaterials, which in turn will enable the determination of their biological safety and biomedical potential in the context of treating cartilage, bone, and bone-cartilage defects. The project manager is Katarzyna Klimek, Ph.D., Ph.D., a professor at the university. The project is being carried out jointly with the Institute of High Pressure Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.Description of tasks:• Performing laboratory work described in the project and supervising daily laboratory activities;• Conducting in vitro studies on biomaterials using cell cultures, including assessment of viability, proliferation, differentiation, and inflammation;• Evaluating gene expression using RT-qPCR;• Preparing biological material and performing ELISA tests;• Analyzing and interpreting obtained results and preparing scientific publications;• Presenting data at internal research team meetings and presenting project results at national and international conferences;Requirements:• A doctoral degree in a pharmaceutical, medical, biological, biotechnological, or related discipline, obtained in the year of employment in the project or within 7 years prior to January 1st of the year of employment in the project (this period can be extended in accordance with point 2.1.1. of the National Science Centre Regulations, which constitute an Annex to NCN Council Resolution No. 50/2023 of May 11, 2023, amending the Regulations on the allocation of funds for the implementation of tasks financed by the National Science Centre in the scope of research projects), obtained from an entity other than the entity where the position is planned to be employed, or completion of at least a 10-month, continuous, and documented postdoctoral fellowship in an entity other than the entity implementing the project and in a country other than the country in which the doctoral degree was obtained;• Good practical and theoretical knowledge of molecular biology techniques;Experience in applying research techniques related to the project's topic (including designing and conducting RT-qPCR reactions, performing ELISA tests, and maintaining cell or tissue cultures);• Knowledge of biomaterials will be considered an additional strong asset;• Fluency in written and spoken English;• Documented scientific achievements in JCR-listed journals, particularly in the field of molecular biology;Employment Conditions:• Full-time employment contract – planned employment period: 6 monthswith the possibility of extension until the end of the project, until September 30, 2027 (an additional extension of up to 7 months is possible if the project is extended).• Planned employment date: May 2026 – to be agreed with the candidate.• Salary: PLN 11,660 gross/month.List of documents required from candidates:1.
