Recruitment is carried out in order to employ an assistant professor (post-doc) to carry out scientific tasks in the project of the National Science Center OPUS 28 " Reflection principles and their epistemic warrant ". The appointment will be at the level of assistant professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Warsaw, for the period of 36 months.

Reflection is a fundamental concept in Philosophy. It has a long history in Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, and the Foundations of Mathematics. In the twentieth century, the concept of reflection was applied in the formulation of a variety of formal reflection principles that play a central role in important philosophical debates: (1) Proof theoretic reflection principles, (2) Set theoretic reflection principles, and (3) Probabilistic reflection principles. These classes of principles express natural and fundamental properties in different philosophical contexts.

Principles in (1) express the so-called soundness of our theories, i.e., that what is provable in our theories is also true. Principles in (2) express that whatever is true in the whole mathematical universe is also true in an initial segment, in a “smaller” part of the universe that resembles the universe as a whole. Finally, principles in (3) recommend to rational agents that their conditional credences reflect their unconditional credences in a specific way.

Despite differences between these classes of principles, all of them substantively employ the concept of reflection. Reflection principles involve taking an outside perspective on our epistemic practices and on the concepts involved in them. In this sense, these reflection principles share philosophical structural similarities: Principles in the first class reflect on our mathematical proofs; principles in the second class reflect on truth in our mathematical universe; principles in the third class reflect on our credences, i.e., our subjective probabilities.

Recently, the study of reflection principles and their philosophical consequences has been steadily gaining more attention from the logical, mathematical, and philosophical communities. However, despite this increased interest, reflection principles of the three classes have been investigated in separate contexts, as topics in different philosophical and mathematical disciplines (proof theory, set theory, and formal epistemology). Because of this separation, little is known about the logical, mathematical, and philosophical interactions and dependencies between reflection principles.

The goal of the project is to develop a general framework that furnishes a deep philosophical and formal understanding of the three kinds of reflection principles. This goal is ambitious, but achievable. Finally, the proposed project is timely: In philosophy, we are currently experiencing a shift towards a more unified study of epistemological and philosophical issues in the formal sciences.

The project is carried out in international cooperation with the University of Konstanz, Germany.

A person employed in a post-doc position will be involved in carrying out the research tasks of the grant, concerning the formal and philosophical analysis of reflection principles of various types. Detailed tasks will be determined in agreement with the selected candidate.

The responsibilities of the person employed in the post-doc position will include:

  • Reliable and timely execution of the research tasks mentioned above, in accordance with the work plan jointly established with the project leader.
  • Regular and active participation in research team meetings. Collaboration with the project leader and other team members aimed at exchanging and developing knowledge related to the project’s subject matter, as well as joint work on research tasks and publications.
  • Publishing the obtained research results in recognized academic journals and publishing houses with international reach.
  • Presenting research results at major national and international conferences and scientific seminars.
  • Assisting in the organization of activities promoting and disseminating the research results obtained within the project, including conferences and seminars.

The post-doc position does not involve any teaching duties, but those who are willing will have the opportunity to gain such experience.
