Institute of Applied Mathematics (IAM) offers postdoc position for research in one of two areas – Statistics and its interfaces and Partial Differential Equations.  The position duration is two years starting from October 2026 but no later than December 2026. The selected applicant will work in one of two departments (Department of Differential Equations or Department of Statistical Analysis). The list of duties will include conducting research, participation in seminars, and scientific collaboration with colleagues from the respective department. Applicants can apply for research topics listed below yet are also encouraged to come with their own proposals provided those fit into the areas mentioned above and match interests of IAM scientists willing to supervise (the list of possible supervisors is given below).

  1. 1. In the field of Statistics and its interfaces (including probability theory and stochastic processes):
  2. - Developing novel functional data analysis methods (supervised by prof. Jurgita Markevičiūtė). This topic aims to develop novel machine learning methods tailored for functional data, where observations are curves, surfaces, or other infinite-dimensional objects. The research will focus on improving representation learning, scalability, and interpretability by integrating ideas from functional data analysis, deep learning, and statistical theory. The proposed methods will be validated on simulated and real-world functional datasets to demonstrate their theoretical guarantees and practical advantages across diverse application domains.
  3. - Topic offered by the applicant and matching research areas of possible supervisors: prof. Jurgita Markevičiūtė and assoc. prof. Viktor Skorniakov.
  4. 2. In the field of Partial differential equations:
  5. - Spectral and Numerical Analysis of Problems with Integral Boundary Conditions (supervised by prof. Olga Štikonienė). In the study of differential and discrete problems with nonlocal boundary conditions, the main objective of the research program is to investigate the qualitative dependence of the spectrum on the kernel defining the problem with a two-point integral condition. In parallel, corresponding discrete problems and their spectra will also be analyzed. Another research direction involves studying the spectral properties of stationary problems with variable coefficients and nonlocal integral conditions.
  6. - Topics supervised by prof. Grigory Panasenko:
  7. 1) Mathematical modelling of the blood flow in left atrium appendage of the heart: existence of solutions of the flow models, numerical simulations and comparison to the clinical information from the cardiology department of the Vilnius Santaros Clinics;
  8. 2) Non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations with non-Newtonian viscosity in networks of blood vessels: well posedness/ asymptotic methods/ partial dimension reduction;
  9. 3) Fluid-structure interaction for vessels with thin elastic wall: well posedness/ asymptotic methods/ partial dimension reduction/ numerical simulations;
  10. 4) Anti-bacterial coating for medical textiles: mathematical modelling/computer simulations.
  11. 3. Topic offered by the applicant and matching research areas of possible supervisors: prof. Grigory Panasenko and prof. Olga Štikonienė.

Skills/Qualifications

  • • Active research experience and strong background in the field of interest.
  • • Several published works in recognized journals in the chosen field.
  • • Interests in teaching with supervisory skills to transfer knowledge to the community.
  • • Good organizational and planning skills, attention to detail, responsibility, easy adaptation to different work environments, and to a new team.
  • • Language Skills: good working knowledge of English (B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) or higher), with strong written and oral communication skills.

Specific Requirements

Desirable Assets (Considered as Advantages):

  • • Experience in academic mentoring, including leading practical seminars or co-supervising student theses within an international university environment.
  • • Demonstrated experience or motivation in drafting grant proposals for international funding agencies.

Specific Institutional Preference:

Strong preference will be given to candidates who obtained their PhD degree from prestigious international research institutions outside of Lithuania.
