Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences - Department of Physics

1 Position as Coordination and Strategic Program Management (m/f/d) of the project FAIRmat with expected full-time employment – E 15 TV-L HU (subject to approval of funding; third-party funding limited until 31.12.2028)

FAIRmat (www.fairmat-nfdi.eu) stands for FAIR Data Infrastructure for Condensed-Matter Physics and the Chemical Physics of Solids and is a consortium within the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). FAIRmat is building a FAIR data infrastructure for materials science and related research fields. A central component is the development of NOMAD (www.nomad-lab.eu), an open-source and customizable platform for research data management across synthesis, experi-mentation, and computation, including the operation of a public deployment that is among the world’s largest data repositories in computational materials science.

Our highly dynamic and international team brings together expertise from software develop-ment, condensed matter physics/chemistry, and materials science.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced candidate to strengthen our interdis-ciplinary team and take a leading role in the strategic coordination, operational management, and further development of FAIRmat and its research data infrastructure.

 

Job description:

  • • coordinate and strategically manage the FAIRmat project in alignment with the Executive Board
  • • represent FAIRmat within the NFDI and contribute to alignment with broader community activities
  • • contribute across all project Areas to data management activities in materials synthesis, theory, and experiment, as well as training and outreach
  • • lead interdisciplinary teams within the central project structure in close collaboration with Area Coordinators to ensure effective implementation across project areas, including coordination of data, tools, and workflows
  • • foster community building and communication across the consortium, supporting knowledge exchange between the central team, PIs, partner institutions, and NFDI initiatives
  • • collaborate with technical teams to support research data infrastructure components and ensure alignment with project objectives
  • • responsibility for the development and implementation of project milestones, provide regular progress reports
  • • represent FAIRmat at national and international conferences and workshops, and lead the dissemination of project results through scientific publications
  • • coordinate activities with partner institutions and stakeholders, including frequent travel
  • • contribute to the acquisition and development of third-party funding initiatives

 

Requirements

  • • completed scientific university degree and a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, computer science or another relevant discipline
  • • proven experience in collaborative, multidisciplinary, and cross-institutional projects 
  • • experience with data modeling, data migration, and object-oriented programming 
  • • experience with data infrastructure and virtualization technologies
  • • strong interest in modern big data solutions, including machine learning
  • • experience with research data management and FAIR data principles, including experience with research data platforms (e.g., NOMAD)
  • • experience with agile and/or matrix project management
  • • experience with European or international research data infrastructure initiatives and frameworks (e.g. EOSC), including experience within the NFDI, is an advantage
  • • strong leadership skills, strong teamwork skills
  • • excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (min. C1); proficiency in German is an advantage
