CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR A POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (BIPD) UNDER THE PROJECT “MITOCONEXÃO: INVESTIGATING THE MITOCHONDRIAL LINK IN ONCOCARDIOLOGY” (REF. NORTE2030-FEDER-02713500), CURRENTLY UNDERWAY AT THE ABEL SALAZAR INSTITUTE OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PORTO
This call for applications is now open for the award of 1 (one) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BIPD) to carry out R&D activities as part of the project “MitOconexão: investigating the mitochondrial link in oncocardiology” (Ref. Norte2030-FEDER-02713500), co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Northern Regional Programme for 2021–2027 (NORTE2030), currently underway at the Multidisciplinary Biomedical Research Unit (UMIB) of the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto, under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Field(s): Medical and Health Sciences.
2. Admission requirements:
All individuals of legal age who meet the following requirements, as evidenced by supporting documentation, are eligible to apply for this scholarship:
- 1. A PhD in Medicine or Biomedicine obtained within the three years prior to the date of submission of the scholarship application;
- 2. The postdoctoral research is carried out at a host organisation other than the onewhere the research leading to the award of the doctoral degree was conducted;
- 3. The grant holder does not, upon the conclusion of the grant contract in question – including any possible renewals – exceed a cumulative period of three years in that capacity, whether consecutive or non-consecutive.
3. Preferential terms:
a) Experience in translational research with clinical teams;
b) Experience in handling human biobank samples;
c) Experience in omics quantification techniques.
4. Work plan:
4.1. The main tasks to be carried out as part of the fellowship will be:
a) Management of human biobank samples;
b) Laboratory work using omics techniques;
c) Management of a translational research project
4.2. Where an academic qualification or degree is awarded whilst the scholarship contract is in force, the scholarship may continue provided that the activities set out in the work plan have not been completed and in accordance with the specific terms set out in the call for applications and in the contract, pursuant to Article 10(6) of the Regulation.
5. Applicable legislation and regulations:
The competition and the award of the scholarship are governed by the provisions set out in the University of Porto’s Research Scholarship Regulations – approved by Regulation No. 582/2026, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 96, of 10 May; The legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015 of 7 January; and Statute of the Research Fellow (EBI), approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current version published by Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of 28 August; Regulation on Research Grants No. 950/2019 of 16 December 2019, issued by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), I.P., in its current version, and other applicable regulations.
6. Place of work:
The research project will be carried out at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto, under the scientific supervision of Professor Mário André da Silva Santos.
7. Duration of the scholarship:
The BIPD will last for 6 months on a full-time basis and may be renewed, subject to a positive assessment, for a maximum duration of 12 months; under no circumstances may it extend beyond the end of the project.
8. Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance:
8.1. The monthly maintenance allowance for the scholarship amounts to €1,901.00, in accordance with Annex I of the Regulations.
8.2. Payment will be made by the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the scholarship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3. The scholarship holder may join the Voluntary Social Security scheme (applicable to scholarship contracts of six months or more); this is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the first bracket of the contribution base.
9. Selection methods:
9.1. The selection methods are as follows: CV assessment (CA), weighted at 70 per cent, and, optionally, supplemented by an interview (INT), weighted at 30 per cent, which will only take place if the Selection Panel considers that the CV assessment does not adequately clarify the candidates’ actual skills or enable it to determine which candidate is best suited to the post and the duties to be performed. If an interview is to be held, it will be conducted with the three candidates who achieved the highest scores in the CV assessment.
9.2. Each member of the jury assesses the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.3. The criteria and weighting factors for the curriculum assessment (CA) are as follows:
a) Academic qualifications equivalent to a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Biology or related fields (0 to 4 points);
(PhD in Biomedical Sciences or Biology – 4 points; PhD in a related field – 3 points; PhD in a field only partially related – 2 points; PhD in a field only indirectly related – 1 point);
b) Experience in clinical and/or translational research into cardiovascular diseases (0 to 8 points);
(Minor experience: 1–3 points; relevant experience: 4–6 points; highly relevant experience: 7–8 points)
c) Scientific output — articles in indexed journals, book chapters and conference presentations (0 to 4 points);
(No relevant scientific output: 0 points; 1 scientific output (indexed articles, book chapters or conference presentations): 1 point; 2 to 3 scientific outputs: 2 points; 3 to 4 scientific outputs: 3 points; More than 4 scientific outputs: 4 points.)
d) Additional training/experience in relevant laboratory techniques, data analysis or bioinformatics (0 to 4 points).
(No relevant additional training: 0 points; Training/experience up to 25 hours: 1 point; Training/experience over 25 hours and up to 75 hours: 2 points; Training/experience over 75 hours and up to 150 hours: 3 points; Training/experience over 150 hours: 4 points.)
9.4. Candidates who have received a score of 9.5 points or less will be excluded at the AC stage.
9.5. Candidates who have received a score of 9.5 points or less will be excluded at the AC stage.
a) Technical knowledge of laboratory and clinical research methodologies applied to the field (0 to 8 points);
(Insufficient knowledge: 0 marks; Limited knowledge: 2 marks; Adequate knowledge: 4 marks; Good knowledge: 6 marks; Very high level of knowledge: 8 marks)
b) Ability to analyse and interpret scientific data (0 to 4 marks);
(Insufficient capacity: 0 points; Reduced capacity: 1 point; Adequate capacity: 2 points; Good capacity: 3 points; Very high capacity: 4 points).
c) Motivation and suitability for the project and the duties to be performed (0 to 4 points);
(Low motivation/poor fit: 0 points; Reduced motivation: 1 point; Adequate motivation: 2 points; Good motivation and fit: 3 points; High motivation and strong fit: 4 points).
d) Ability to communicate scientific findings and work as part of a multidisciplinary team (0 to 4 marks).
(Insufficient skills: 0 points; Limited skills: 1 point; Adequate skills: 2 points; Good skills: 3 points; Very high skills: 4 points).
9.6. Candidates may apply to the chair of the selection panel for permission to have their interview conducted via videoconference, setting out their reasons for doing so.
9.7. Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is deemed to constitute withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded from the competition.
9.8. The Final Ranking (FR) will be calculated using the following formula:
CF = (0,7 AC) + (0,3 ENT)
9.9. Candidates who have achieved a score of 9.5 points or less in the CF will be excluded from the competition.
9.10. This competition is intended solely to fill the vacancy specified; should no candidate demonstrate that they possess the profile required to carry out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Selection Panel reserves the right not to fill the post through this competition.

1st full member: Professor Sofia Daniela da Silva Pereira, PhD, Associate Professor at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS);
2nd full member: Professor Inês Maria Falcão Sousa Pires Marques, PhD, Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP);
1st Alternate Member: Dr Márcia Raquel Pereira de Almeida e Liz, Assistant Researcher at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS);
2nd Alternate Member: Dr António Sousa Barros, Assistant Researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP);
11. Format and deadline:
11.1. Applications must be submitted from July 20, 2026, to July 31, 2026 (11:59 p.m. local time – Lisbon).
11.2. Applications must be submitted via the online application system, available on the APPLY website: https://app.apply.up.pt (Ref. BOLS-ICBAS-26-9).
11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving compliance with the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:
a) Curriculum vitae;
b) Letter of motivation, stating your availability to commence the work plan;
c) A copy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications and recognition of the degree if it was obtained from a foreign higher education institution (this recognition may be submitted by the time of appointment);
d) Declaration of eligibility (attached).
11.4. Applicants may also submit any other documents they consider relevant to the assessment of their merits.
11.5. Failure to meet the deadline for submitting the application, or the failure to submit, or the late submission of, the documents referred to in subparagraphs (a) to (e) of paragraph 11.3 shall result in the exclusion of the application.
11.6. For the purposes of assessing applications, no documents accessed via links will be taken into account, with the exception of those that refer to publications with a DOI.
11.7. The documents referred to in point 11.3 should, preferably, be submitted in a non-editable format.
11.8. The Selection Panel may, whenever it deems necessary, request applicants to submit additional documentation relating to the details set out in their CV, setting a deadline for this purpose, as follows:
a) the documentation referred to is not intended for the submission of information not included in the curriculum vitae, nor for the provision of any missing documents required under this Notice;
b) all applicants are hereby informed that additional documentation has been requested.
12. False statements:
Any false statements made by candidates will be punished in accordance with the law.
13. Method of publishing/notifying the results:
13.1. Notifications are made by publication on the Apply UP electronic platform, in accordance with Article 112(1)(c) of the CPA, and take effect in accordance with Article 113 of the CPA.
13.2. In accordance with Article 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit their comments in writing.
14. Reserve list:
A reserve list will be drawn up on the basis of the final ranking list, which may be used should the candidate ranked first withdraw. The Faculty’s highest authority reserves the right to call upon the next candidate on the list, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.
