Within the framework of project PID2024-156537NB-C21 ('ASCEND: Evaluation and Fe-SMA Strengthening of Concrete Infrastructure with Corroded Flexural and Shear Reinforcement in Light of Climate Challenges'), the successful candidate will mainly focus on experimentally and numerically assessing eight full-scale slab-type dock elements recently removed from a marina after decades of service in a highly aggressive marine environment.

Specific tasks:

• • Designing the experimental campaign using the available dock elements, including the necessary trials to spot flexural and shear failures.
• • Designing and implementing the monitoring strategy, including Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and other instrumentation techniques as applicable.
• • Developing advanced finite element models for the samples using ATENA software.
• • Undertaking the experimental campaign, including sample preparation, instrumentation, running trials, collecting data and coordinating logistics linked to transporting the elements from the storage area to the lab facilities, as well as on-site placement for the trials and coordinating final transportation to recycling facilities.
• • Characterising materials (reinforced concrete and steel), including a detailed assessment of the corroded reinforcement after testing.
• • Analysing and interpreting the experimental and numerical results, with a particular focus on flexural ductility loss and shear strength degradation caused by corrosion.
• • Publishing the research findings in high-impact international journals and presenting them at major scientific conferences.

In parallel, the post-doctoral researcher may contribute (to a lesser extent) to other ongoing research activities within the same research project, including accelerated corrosion processes in newly constructed RC beams and the development and assessment of innovative strengthening solutions.
